Mary Blair and John Stewart.
« on: Friday 19 August 16 14:41 BST (UK) »
Hi there,
I'm trying to trace marriage or census records for John Stewart and Mary Blair. The only lead I have is a Statutory marriage certificate for their son, also John Stewart. The certificate shows John(jnr) residence at time of his marriage to Agnes Weir MacKinlay on 3 Dec 1889 as Montgomery Street in Edinburgh, (he is listed as a Master Grocer, age 25). He is listed on the 1891 census as living round the corner in Brunton Terrace. John Stewart snr is given as a cotton spooler as occupation, though his son is a grocer. I'm also assuming that John and Mary could have been born around 1840-5.
I would like any leads at all please as I keep drawing a blank. :(
Also, were there cotton mills at that time in Edinburgh or could he have been employed elsewhere, such as Lanark?
Thank you ;)

Depending on what the census tells you about John jnr's birthplace, I wonder whether this record is his?

In that case (Paisley birthplace confirmed), the 1864 birth I found looks promising.

If you search for John b 1864 Paisley you should find him quite easily in Abbey, Paisley in 1871 and 1881 with parents John and Mary.

You were looking a rather narrow range of birthdates for his parents, perhaps assuming John was their eldest child? In fact John snr appears to have been born c1830 Arran, Buteshire and Mary was about the same age from Argyllshire.

Sorry - I think I'd alighted on the wrong people in 1871, 1881 - see later in thread.

That is AMAZING! :o  Thank you so much!
I've been trawling for ages through Ancestry site and haven't even come near this. The 1911 Census puts John jnr as being born in Paisley so this very much fits.
Is there any way I can trace further back for John snr and Mary Blair please  ;)

An 1853 marriage in Paisley for John Stewart and Mary Blair:

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYQH-YQQ

Unfortunately an 1853 marriage is too early for civil registration in Scotland (which began in 1855) so you won't get the benefit of their parents being named on their marriage registration.  However, if they died in Scotland their parents should be named on their death entries, which you can obtain from ScotlandsPeople (www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk).

Not sure but isn't John with mother Mary in 1881 as a Grocers assistant? Look for sister Margaret Gray Stewart.

Hmmm.  Yes, that must be right.  Here's Margaret's 1862 birth:

I've amended earlier in the thread, as the family I'd found in 1871/1881 must have been a different one.
