tracing a relative without a maiden name
« on: Saturday 20 August 16 00:06 BST (UK) »
Hi, I have been trying to find my great, great grandmother.  I know where and what year she was born but do not have a maiden name for her.  I have a surname which is supposedly her married name but there is no marriage certificate.  I can trace her to various places but cannot go any further back than her birth year.  Has anyone got ideas  please.

Welcome to Rootschat.

Can you tell us what you know i.e. her first name, "married" surname, date and place of birth. That way people may be able to help find her or at least suggest where you could look.

Sorry avm - our posts crossed.

Hi everyone,

My great, great grandmothers name was Christina Montrose and she was born in Plymouth in 1855.  Her daughter was Alice Montrose and she was born in 1877 in Liverpool

Hi Carol,

Yes it is Alice.  My mum said there was talk Alices father was an actor but again we have been unable to trace him.  He appears on her marriage certificate as Edward Montrose.

This may be worth following up...

There aren't many births of girls called Christina/Christiana in Plymouth district in the 1850s. One of them is Christiana Scawn born 1855 Oct-Dec. There's no marriage for her on FreeBMD. So she could be your "Mrs" Montrose, but perhaps a wedding never took place, or wasn't in England or Wales.

Alice's birth certificate should tell you her mother's maiden name.

Hi Suzie and a welcome from me too

Looking at census and other documents her age does seem to vary. There are a number of quite detailed documents about her in the institutions and organisations section on FindMyPast which would be well worth looking at if you have not done so already. One has a photo of her and  a detailed description. I cannot see a maiden name in them but it might be worth looking at how old she says she is in each of them.(she seems to give her year of birth as 1857 rather than 1855 in a lot of them).

It might be laborious but given that she seems to consistently give her place of birth as Plymouth I would be inclined to search for Christinas born in Plymouth in the right time frame in the births on bmd and in the 1861 and 1871 census and try to work it out by a process of elimination.
