Finding RAF service number
« on: Saturday 20 August 16 05:36 BST (UK) »
Hi, hoping someone can help. My father Thomas BARDSLEY Powell served in the RAF in UK,  as a pattern maker, how can I find his service number?

Why do you want his number? If it's to get his docs from MOD you can get them without his number.
His date of birth will be OK.

If he married whilst in the RAF his number should be on his marriage certificate. :)

I want to place a memorial for him but they want his service number. I know he is due a medal, but he never got around to claiming it. I am in Australia, his service was 1943/4 to 46/46, not sure. He was married in 1946 in uniform, but we don't have marriage certificate.

What was his wife's maiden name?

There are these Thomas B Powell marriages in 1946.

June quarter: Powell Thomas B married an Irene B Allum, Epping 4a 826

Sept quarter: Powell Thomas B married Elsie Backer, Barrow F 10b 378

I have the marriage certificate of someone who was in the RAF when he married but his Service Number is not noted - I don't know if this was the norm or not, but perhaps don't expect it.

You may be better off applying for his service record which will give you his number plus other information about your father's service. This will cost you £30. A marriage certificate costs £9.25.

If you wish, you can apply for his medals: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/the-ministry-of-defence-medal-office
If you contact them and make enquiries about his medals, if he has claimed them, or what was due to him, their return correspondence will give you his service number. An enquiry costs nothing.

Good luck.

Thank you Jamjar, mums name was Elsie Backen, they were married on 16 Sept 1946. Dad was born 30.12.1925.
Would that be his service number 10b 378?

10b  378    looks like  the Index reference  for his birth registration.

You can apply for his medals, with his full name and date of birth.
