George Son of John Hood bapt Gateshead 1st Oct 1786, any info please?
« on: Saturday 20 August 16 12:56 BST (UK) »
Hello All

My 4 X times Gt. Grandfather George Hood, appears in the Selby Land Tax records in 1812 and married Sarah Russel at Selby 18 July 1815 (Marriage Intention and Bond to the Selby Peculiar Court dated 16 May 1815), giving his age as 28 years and Occupation as Cooper in all Marriage documents.

George Hood lives at Selby, becoming a Retail Brewer by about 1826 and has a Tannery at Selby by about 1830 and dies at Selby 18 September 1845, age given as 60 years on Death Certificate. His Selby Will bundle confirms his death date, mentions Wren Lane and Gowthorpe and that he was a Brewer and Tanner.

There is NO Baptism entry in the Selby Parish Register for George Hood and NO Selby burial record either.

There is also no record of any Selby burial for four of his adult children and nor his Widow Sarah Hood who died 11 Gowthorpe, Selby, on 28 November 1879 aged 86, in the Selby Parish Register, nor in the Selby Council Cemetery either (opened 1858).

My George Hood, is not the same George Hood of Morpeth, Northumberland, nor the Army George Hood who died at Leeds, earlier in September 1845.

1863 South Bishopwearmouth / Sunderland
However, when James and Sarah Hood of Selby, had their son James Alfred Hood on 25 September 1863, they gave their address as 34 Blandford Street, Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland, but were back at Selby for the birth of their next child.

James Hood (father of James Alfred Hood) was one of five sons of my mysterious 4 X Gt. Grandfather George Hood who married at Selby in July 1815.

1st Oct 1786 Gateshead, Baptism - Geo: Son of John Hood
The above George Hood Marriage and Death documents confirm a birth circa 1785 to 1787 for George Hood, making the Gateshead Baptism Geo: S. of John Hood, an ideal suggestion, but I have absolutely no document to link this George Hood of Gateshead to the appearance of George Hood of Selby.

1787 Whitehead's Newcastle Directory, printed by T. Angus
Alphabetical List of the People in Trade, &c. in GATESHEAD, COUNTY OF DURHAM.
Hood John, publican, Ship, South-shore

John Hood of Gateshead was the Publican of the "Ship" in the 1787 Directory (later known as The Ship Inn), but for how long is unclear?

Brief Summary of Research on other Hoods in Gateshead and Newcastle

1787 Directory also lists:-
Anthony Hood, fitter, office, Broad chair.
Robert Hood, Spirit-dealer, north fide [side], Sandhill.

1786 - Robert Hood from Newcastle to Sunderland
BNA online - Newcastle Courant 7 October 1786 - Robert Hood from Newcastle wishes to acquaint his friends and the public, that he has entered upon the King's Head Inn, SUNDERLAND.

Anthony Hood,
Fitter of Simpsons - Pontop,
Tanfield-moor,
Blaydon-main,
Longbenton,
South-moor,
Whitefield,

Marly-hill, Coals.

Sounds like Anthony Hood of Newcastle, was a firm with contracts to the coal mining industry.

1799 Anthony Hood of Newcastle
NC council - Archaeology 2005
"George Wray, brick maker on South Shore, also owned a rope-walk (HER 5650; Fig 12) in 1771 (op cit,  p 78). This may be the same as that established by Stoddart and Co. in 1795 at Saltmeadows (HER 4366: Fig 12) and soon owned solely by a former partner Anthony Hood. In 1799 Hood introduced a rope-making machine, patented by William Chapman in 1798. This technological innovation eventually superceded the earlier rope-walks and marked the beginning of the growth of ropemaking in Gateshead (op cit, p 78)."

Question
Looking for any document please, regarding John Hood of Gateshead and son George, to fill the gaps and/or to see if the George Hood 1786 baptism at St Mary's Gateshead, links to my George Hood of Selby, who appears in the Selby Land Tax in 1812?

I am also wondering if John Hood, Publican of the Ship, continued to renew his Victuallers Licence at Gateshead, or elsewhere in the Newcastle area?

Thank you.

Kind regards, Mark

Hello dobfarm, Claire and All

I see you found the Hood & Ryle, Newcastle, information I posted on another thread, for another Rootschatter. I noticed the reference to Sinclair too.

Been going through the Hoods in North-east newspapers and Jabez Hood (defendant) got into a Court dispute in 1827 Hammond v. Hood, regarding a loan of 300.l from Edw Hammond who sought to recover it from Jabez Hood and in the pre-amble to this later Court dispute it says ...

The late Mr Robert Hood, the father of the defendant had carried on successfully, for many years, the trade of Victualler, and dying in 1812, when his family were minors, their affairs got into the Court of Chancery. Mr Hammond was appointed by the Court of Chancery to conduct the business in 1816, and continued to conduct for several years.

Mr Hammond had been instructed in the art of rectifying, and had, for a considerable time, conducted a distillery at Brighton.

Its seems Robert Hood birth 1771 is as allusive as Richard Hood birth 1774 (father of William Hood the cooper bapt 1817) and John Hood birth 1756 ( father of George Hood bapt 1786 Gateshead)

Thanks Claire and dobfarm

I've updated my post and you will see from my newspaper report that Jabez Hood is the son of Robert Hood a Victualler who died 1812.

Also found a quote on Rootschat (see my last post) re Jane Stodhart nee Jane Hood of Gateshead.

Whether John Hood, Mariner who married Elizabeth Gibson in December 1779 is linked, or a 'loose canon' remains to be seen.

From reading the threads re the burial of George Hood and a possible Non Conformist burial taking place - the Jane Hood that married Rev Robert Stodhart may be worth looking into further.

A Rev. Robert Stodhart was a Methodist New Connexion minister. Born 1779-1846
