Mary West and David Parfitt married 1819 in Plymouth
« on: Tuesday 23 August 16 00:30 BST (UK) »
David Parfitt of Clutton, Somerset (1784-1833) was in the Royal Marines in Plymouth in 1819. I have a record of David's enlistment in the Royal Marines (from PRO Kew) with all his details. He married a Mary West. On the parish record of their marriage at Plymouth Charles (Dec 5 1819) she is a widow. I have spent a lot of time looking for a Mary marrying a Mr West (and a death of a Mr West) in the west country but have come up with nothing logical.

Does anyone have information on Mary West/Mary Parfet please?  She was in Somerset in 1828-35 and in Llangattock, Brecknockshire, Wales in 1841.

The most likely person for Mary West is the one baptised in Plymouth Charles on 18 May 1798. Her parents were William and Elizabeth (Haynes). She seems to have gone back to her maiden name - if it changed - after the death of her first husband. I would be interested in any comments.

By the way some of David and Mary's line (via Mary Ann) and Mary's line (via Alfred) continued: Alfred Parfitt's (1835) son George (1859) married Mary-Ann Parfitt's (1828) daughter Emma (1862). They had 6 children including Reginald Horace Parfitt (1896-1967).

That would make her 21yrs old when they married in 1819 so she would have to have been married, widowed and re-married by age 21

How old was she when she died?

In 1841 she was aged 40, so was born 1797 to 1801. She died between 1841 and 1851. There is a death reported in Jan-Mar 1851 in Crickhowell Wales. This could be her. If she went back to Somerset, there are several deaths reported in Somerset between 1841 and 1851.

Hi

Daughter Mary Ann married 1847 Thomas Rider, is that correct ?

If so, Mary West/Parfett/ is with the couple in 1851  ~ Class: HO107; Piece: 1877; Folio: 423; Page: 9

Since 1851 census states Mary was born Plympton St Mary I personally don't think she can be the Mary West you've found.

I also don't think if Mary West was a widow that she would have reverted to using her maiden name when she remarried which you are suggesting was West in light of the baptism you found 1798 at Plymouth Charles.  A highly unlikely thing to have done for the time.

I note that Alfred was actually illegitimate born some 2 years after David Parfitt died, even though he names him as his father when he married.

Wow. How did I miss that 1851 reference over all these years. She WAS the mother in law of Thomas Ryder, and a washer woman.  Now I will look for her birth. Her marriage record at Charles-Plymouth 5 Dec 1819, to David Parfitt, says she was Mary West a widow, although the writing looks like "a Hidone". She made her mark X. She would have been a very young widow.

You don't think a minister may have had really bad handwriting and it could possibly say Mary was a MINOR. It does seem she was quite young to be getting married again at 19 :)
