Welcome to Rootschat :)

You won't find a birth certificate for John as he was born long before civil registration was introduced in England on 1 July 1837.  A baptism is the best you can hope for.

You say you have his marriage - can you give us details of that?

Is he this man?

1851: John LIGHTELL, 40 b Dunkerley Northumberland, in Bishopwearmouth (wife Catherine).
1861: John LEIGHTON, 50 b Charlton Northumberland, in Bishopwearmouth (wife Catherine).
1871: John LIGHTELL, 60 b Sunderland, in Bishopwearmouth (wife Catherine).
Ayr: Barnes, Wylie
Caithness: MacGregor
Essex: Eldred (Pebmarsh)
Gloucs: Timbrell (Winchcomb)
Hants: Stares (Wickham)
Lincs: Maw, Jackson (Epworth, Belton)
London: Pierce
Suffolk: Markham (Framlingham)
Surrey: Gosling (Richmond)
Wilts: Matthews, Tarrant (Calne, Preshute)
Worcs: Milward (Redditch)
Yorks: Beaumont, Crook, Moore, Styring (Huddersfield); Middleton (Church Fenton); Exley, Gelder (High Hoyland); Barnes, Birchinall (Sheffield); Kenyon, Wood (Cumberworth/Denby Dale)

If that's him then this appears to be the marriage:

Sep qtr 1844, Sunderland

John LIGHTELL
Catherine CLARK

vol 24 p199

The marriage certificate should tell you the name and occupation of John's father, and also the names of at least two witnesses.
Ayr: Barnes, Wylie
Caithness: MacGregor
Essex: Eldred (Pebmarsh)
Gloucs: Timbrell (Winchcomb)
Hants: Stares (Wickham)
Lincs: Maw, Jackson (Epworth, Belton)
London: Pierce
Suffolk: Markham (Framlingham)

Wilts: Matthews, Tarrant (Calne, Preshute)
Worcs: Milward (Redditch)
Yorks: Beaumont, Crook, Moore, Styring (Huddersfield); Middleton (Church Fenton); Exley, Gelder (High Hoyland); Barnes, Birchinall (Sheffield); Kenyon, Wood (Cumberworth/Denby Dale)

I think the POB for him in 1851 is Dunterley. Located in Charlton area, which is in the wider Parish of Bellingham.

According to IGI his father was also John Lightell.
At his marriage his status is widowed so another wife somewhere.
Unusual name isn't it?
Her father is John Clark.
FreeBMD has an 1840 death for a Margaret Lightell in Sunderland.

The NBI is usually a good place to look for name locations, however there is only 1 Lightell on the whole index anywhere in the England & Wales.
There are 2 with the name Lightle.
It sounds to me that it's a corruption of another name although I couldn't say what that might be.
Lighthall perhaps.
