Is he a convict?
« on: Thursday 25 August 16 03:37 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have suspicions an ancestor is a convict, but apart from having the same name, no documents to "prove" the convict and person are the same. I found an article in Trove that related to Municipal Court in the Bendigo area. Would Public Records have anything from that day in court, that would mention if he was transported to Australia? He was a free man at the time and was not convicted of anything.
He got married after he was free, so no permission to marry documents. He was married in South Australia and the info from SA web site, has very little on the marriage.

 ;D

If you were to provide his name and details perhaps there's a number of RChatters on the Australia board who would help your quest.

The convict in question is Peter Farrell. Arrived on the "Clyde" 1832. I have found the convict info and certificate of freedom.

Have you asked a moderator to move your thread to the Australia Board?

http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/87945395 Bendigo Advertiser 26 July 1860
Peter FARRELL and his wife, Rosanna ........... The Police Magistrate remarked that he had known Farrell for some time as a respectable man

Quite possible there were several chaps with that name in the colonies.

perhaps that transcription of a parish register matches up to the following indexed NSW BDM Early Church Record 1851, Line 54 Volume 118
