Murdoch, Windsor Cottages, Gamrie
« on: Friday 26 August 16 15:04 BST (UK) »
I have a birth certificate and marriage certificate which both mention an address as Windsor Cottage or Cottages, Gamrie.

Nothing else, no street or house number and no indication of precise settlement. However, anecdotally it may be in Gardenstown.

Does anyone with any local knowledge know where this address is or was? I've searched high and low and can't find it.

Thanks

Sarah

Sorry. I meant to say 1930s for certificates.

Hi Sarah

Have you tried using the Valuation Rolls to search on SP? As you know the surnames of the families involved you might find something to indicate at least which settlement they lived in (or if they did not). The 1930 list has entries simply as eg. House 6 Gardenstown. These properties may have been given names subsequently but not been legally known by them.
The NLS Georeferenced maps http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=10&lat=57.5793&lon=-3.2447&layers=10&b=1 indicate that very little has changed in Gamrie over the last 100 years so chances are the building still exists, only the name has changed.

Hi Kirsty
Thanks for your reply. I had done exactly as you suggested for Gardenstown and had no luck. However, by coincidence I got a phone call today from the person who runs the small heritage centre in Gardenstown. It was closed when I visited last month but I'd taken the telephone number down. I'm so glad I did because she knows exactly where the cottage is even though it's not noted down by that name on any maps. Just outside Gardenstown, tucked away down a small unmarked road. I'm now going back to the valuation rolls for that small area to see what I can find!
