If this is John and Ellen in Canada, in 1911, they had two children, Gladys and Jack, there:

Marriage cert for James: http://www.rootschat.com/links/01ict/

Marriage cert for Gladys: http://www.rootschat.com/links/01ics/

A John Salt age 33, bricklayer, Staffordshire, on ship - Laurentian - April 1906: http://www.rootschat.com/links/01icu/

The remaining family arrived August 1906: http://www.rootschat.com/links/01icv/

Death cert of their son John (Jack) aged 3 from Tuberculous meningitis Oct 11, 2012: http://www.rootschat.com/links/01icw/

I'm wondering if this Helen Salt may be Ellen. She died same place and year as Jack and also of TB. It has her birthdate as 23 April 1878, death Sept 29, 1912: http://www.rootschat.com/links/01icy/

I'm pretty sure that's them in the Canadian census. But Ellen didn't die until at least 1914, the year that her daughter Elsie was married, because she is listed as "mother of the bride" on the marriage certificate.

I really can't say enough how much I appreciate all of you looking for this information, when it isn't even your ancestor ... you've helped me so much and now that missing part of my family tree is absolutely full of data, sources and even images. Thank you!

Re: Ellen and marriage of children, do early Canadian marriage certificates state if a parent is deceased? Or is it simply a case of saying who the parent is whether alive or deceased?

Do you have the deaths for John Snr and Ellen?

I not saying that Helen is sure to be Ellen, but there sure are similarities, eg. April birthdate and correct year, place of death same as a child with the correct name and same disease, closeness of death to that of the child.
