Margaret Melbourne Bate Croft/Winwick/Warrington
« on: Wednesday 31 August 16 14:15 BST (UK) »
I'm a little stuck with one of my hubby's ancestors, I'm not sure if I'm missing something or looking for something that doesn't exist.

From Census records I believe she was born in Croft, Warrington around 1825/1827.

The first post 1836 record I have for her is in the 1841 Census where she is living in a household on Butter Market Street. There is a family where the head is a surgeon and several people with the same surname, then Margaret and a few other people with a different surname as possible borders/domestic servants.

Then in 1846 she marries Joseph Ashbrook and her father is listed as John Bate. I had wondered if she had been widowed and looked for a marriage for Margaret Bate to a Mr Melbourne but couldn't find one. Then I found a little more detail to the marriage and she is showing as a spinster. So should I assume she was born out of wedlock?

Name   Joseph Ashbrook
Event Type   Marriage
Event Date   28 Dec 1846
Event Place   St James, Latchford, Cheshire, England
Gender   Male
Age (Formatted)   26y
Marital Status   Single
Father's Name   Samuel Ashbrook
Spouse's Name   Margaret Melbourne
Spouse's Marital Status   Single
Spouse's Father's Name   John Bate

The census information from 1851 to 1911 state that Margaret was born in Croft. I know the parish church at Croft wasn't built until early 1830s and that St Oswalds at Winwick was the parent church. St Oswalds do have some parish records on line but I can't find a Melbourne baby that fits. There are baptisms of children of a John Bate around the same period but there are a fair few Bate records so it might not be the same man.

Am I looking for something that might not exist or is there somewhere else I should be looking for Margaret Melbourne?
