Inmate
« on: Wednesday 31 August 16 18:54 BST (UK) »
These people live in Allonby in 1841 census, John & George Nicholson are described as inmates, but there is a big cross through, they do not appear to be with their parents, I am trying to locate parents of a John Nicholson b 1830 in Allonby.
Could anyone explain why they are inmates please?

It may be an error by the enumerator , if you look on the other half of the page there are other youngsters listed as inmates and then crossed out.

I think "inmate" is likely to be used here in the archaic sense - equivalent to lodger or boarder.

In fact if you look through all the 8 pages, it occurs often.

This site may be of use to you

http://web.archive.org/web/20130320174640/http://www.cumberlandroots.co.uk/

and the parish page for Allonby indicates two references for a John Nicholson

http://web.archive.org/web/20130915055148/http://www.cumberlandroots.co.uk/Allonby.htm

but it looks like you have to email the owner for the details (if the link is still working)
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

Hope you don't mind me "stealing" your answer  ;D

I got a Scottish birth record only the other day and both the parents names are listed (although he was illegitimate) and the father was described as "inmate" . Was scratching my head as to what that meant as I had never come across it before. Then I saw this post and my query was solved.

Thanks again Rootschatters - two for the price of one.
