Toronto: John LEONARD, born c1840/41, Middlesex, UK
« on: Saturday 03 September 16 17:00 BST (UK) »
Hello,

The Royal Philanthropic Society's records indicate that John LEONARD emigrated to Toronto shortly after 1855 (exact date unknown) and I wonder if someone could kindly find any details for him should it be possible from passenger listings etc.   I have been unable to retrieve family details for him in the UK.

Thank you for your help.

Hi BAC3

Are you trying to work out who his parents were?

There are 6 John Leonards in the 1851 census with a birth of 1841 +/- 2 yrs in the London area. That's not too many to look for in the 1861 to see if there are any potential candidates.

I also know it's not fool-proof but somewhere to start.

Have you had a look for possibles in the London Baptisms on Ancestry?

I took a quick look in the 1861 Upper Canada (Ontario) census and found several John Leonards/Lenards but only one that was born in England but he was in his 60's and had children in their 20's born in Canada. So, not your man. All the other's were Irish/US/Canadian born. Maybe he left Canada for the USA?

A couple of possibilities for John Leonards in the 1860 US census- one in California and one in Philadelphia, born in England circa 1839, single. Nothing to make a definitive conclusion with.
Passenger lists pre 1865 in Canada are almost non existent.

Thank you for the information.......I am very grateful.

I shall ask the Surrey History Centre if they are reasonably able to review the Admissions Registers that they hold for the Royal Philanthropic Society and seek any parental details.

For the moment
