Tracing an Austrian birth record
« on: Sunday 04 September 16 12:46 BST (UK) »
Census records show my 3rd GGrandmother birth as Austria. Where is best place to find her birth record / certificate please? Ancestry doesn't seem to cover this area. I am awaiting confirmation of her maiden name but advance insight on where to look would be great
Thanks

It is highly likely that the record you are looking for is not online, so take that into consideration. Do you know where in Austria you are looking for, and the religious affiliation of the family? Church (or synagogue) records are what you will be looking for as a civil registration system wasn't introduced until 1938.

Remember that "Austria" on an old record might not be referring modern Austria, also.

Was your ancestor an Austrian national or a British Subject born overseas?  If it was the latter, I know that Find My Past has the index of British nationals born abroad.

Thanks. 2 census records say British Subject. I have looked in findmypast but can't find Antonia or her son Henry but did find a John Henry Watkins that could be her son but unsure if they would be classed as British subjects too

1861 census indicates birthplace 'Bohemia', possibly  :-\ Neuhaus  :-\

My apologies, that should have read 1871 census  :-[ I have edited my posting  :-[
