Can anyone help me find John Paterson and Ellen Costin please?
« on: Sunday 04 September 16 20:20 BST (UK) »
Hi, I'm new here, so apologies if I ask anything obvious. I'm looking for any information about my great grandparents, John and Ellen Paterson. John was born in Argyll, Scotland in 1855 and moved to London when he was about eighteen. He married Ellen or Nellie Costin, born about 1864 in Luton or Westminster and they had three daughters, my grandmother Nellie in 1888, Flora in 1890 and Mary in 1893, all born in Bermondsey. I can only find them mentioned on the 1891 and 1901 census records and by the 1911 census John was a widower. I can't find any birth or marriage details or any information about Ellen's death, so I'm really stuck. The 1911 census records four children that died as well, which my mum knew nothing about and I would love to know more if anyone can help. Thank you - this site looks like a mine of information and so interesting.

Hi Heywood,

Thanks so much for your reply so quickly! Yes, I did find that entry and I think it could be my great grandfather, but I have no way of knowing for sure as I don't know when he got married. I don't know who the other Patersons are either - whether they're relatives or just a coincidence. I'll keep trying, because I really want to know - this is really addictive, in a nice way, isn't it? Thanks again for your help.

Kind regards, Victoria

Have you found these marriages for a man called Edward Gardner?

1883 to Ellen Costin - both aged 20 yrs  her father is George, deceased, carpenter

1888 to Margaret Teulon

He says he is a bachelor on the 2 nd marriage but his occupation is similar on both and his father's details are the same.

If it is your Ellen, that may be the reason there is no marriage.

Yes, I did find the marriage to Edward Gardner and also his second marriage and came to the same conclusion as you, although I suppose I didn't want it to be the case. The signatures are very similar on the marriage certificates though. Also, I've found several references to George, a carpenter which makes me think he could have been her father, but again nothing definite. I think I'm going to have to accept that I'm looking for something that isn't there in regard to a marriage. I'd love to know what really happened though!

Thanks again, Victoria

Hi Groom,

Thanks for the welcome and your reply. I've looked at so many records that I can't remember exactly why I discounted the Ellen you mention, but I think it might be the one I found who very sadly died in childbirth. I will look again though, in case I'm wrong. Thank you for your help though.

Kind regards

Victoria
