BENNETT & ELAM marriage 1907
« on: Monday 05 September 16 06:00 BST (UK) »
Henry BENNETT and Clara ELAM have a marriage registered March Qtr 1907 in Holbeck district. I am having great trouble tracking Clara by that surname in earlier census. In 1911 (incorrectly transcribed as Adam BENNETT) at Morley with her husband and children she states born Thornhill, aged 32 so appx 1879. The only woman I can track that appears to match is a Clara EDEN dau of Matthew and Mary.
To add to the confusion there are two more BENNETT children born, Arthur 1912 and William 1914 both at Holbeck district where the mothers maiden name is ELAM.

Can anyone help verify her correct surname/fathers name as I haven't been able to find the full copy of the marriage certificate despite having access to the West Yorkshire non-conformist records where many others in the family are found.
Thank you in advance.

Here's a thought, was she married before?

Clara Ellen Holdsworth married John William ELAM March 1899 Bradford v9b p129

John William ELAM died December 1903 age 26 Huddersfield v9a p246

Perhaps you should get the Bennett/Elam marriage certificate to determine who her father was to be sure.

Thank you for the reply mirl but I can see a John W HOLDSWORTH with wife Ellen in the 1911 census at Thornton. This seems to be the same couple despite earlier census where both her first names are used.

Hi

If she had been married before she would have used her maiden name when registering the children's births and not he first husbands surname.

If she is from the Thornhill area she could be from the Grange Moor/Hopton Elam/Ellam's.

I will have a look to see if I have anything

Hi Just had a quick check.

You might have been looking at the wrong person in the 1911 census.

A Clara Bennett born 1886 is married to a Henry and living with his parents.

A Clara Elam was 8 Feb 1886 at Lower Wortley and she is the daughter of Squire & Ann Elizabeth Elam.

Thank you for that info John. I had been told that the two children shown in 1911, Albert and Miriam, are definitely the children of the family I am researching. I wonder if Clara was a pseudonym and she had a different legal name.

Sorry, but you won't find the Bennett/Elam marriage on-line - it was at Holbeck District Registered Building (YorkshireBMD)
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
