THE CHEQUERS HOTEL on crossroads - bridge nearby. UK LOCATION help, please
« on: Monday 05 September 16 09:51 BST (UK) »
 Hello!

Any ideas please as to the location of

"THE CHEQUERS HOTEL"

Circa 1915? An inn sign - a chequers board - hangs to the right by the telegraph pole. The brick built  building stands on a crossroads with a bridge straight along the road. There appears to be corrugated iron sheds of two heights to the left (probably long gone). The house facing at the right has "A W 1908" just under the roof apex.

Have tried extensive internet searches for many Chequers Hotels without success. Any ideas gratefully received!

With thanks~001uk

I can't see the corrugated sheets or the "A W 1908" under an apex. Are they on another photograph or on another part of the larger photograph?

I'm just wondering if you could possibly post them as it may give us more clues so that we can help.

I've got some good news for you. It's the Tame Otters, Lichfield Road, Hopwas

Google streetview: https://goo.gl/maps/LnAb7Jf1wWr

The hotel now:

http://www.vintageinn.co.uk/content/vintage-inn/en/restaurants/midlands/thetameotterhopwastamworth

I've phoned them up, spoke to a young lady Cazza and she said it was indeed called the Chequers Hotel at one time. She did give me her email address to send me the link to this post but I must have got it wrong as it bounced.

The way I found it was by searching https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=chequers+bridge and under images I found this picture of it in c.1965:

http://www.francisfrith.com/hopwas/hopwas-the-chequers-and-cross-roads-c1965_h413008
(I can't post that image as it's copyright)

I then went on Google streetview for Hopwas, and saw Tame Otters pub and rang them up.

Hey presto.

All the best,
Trystan

It was indeed. I did the same search and didn't spot it. Its appearance has changed a great deal.

But is it Howpas or Hopwas?

Ah, you're quite right - it is Hopwas, so I've gone back and corrected my post. Thanks for spotting it. ;)
