Hello trystan (and ShaunJ),

Absolutely brilliant work. Top detecting skills and SO quick. Many thanks indeed. Also ShaunJ for the extra info. ALL appreciated.

Incidentally Hopwas never featured in ANY of my internet hits. Understandable to a degree due to the change in name. Even so you would have thought it would have come up somewhere! I did try Google's B&W images but never found the Frith's. I had 12+ Chequers on my list.

I checked the 1912 Kelly's Directory for Staffordshire and found the entry with Harry FOX the landlord.

Again many thanks to all - I might even list some more!

Dyslexic fingers?! ;D

Yes, must be. I've not even been on the beer either.

Glad to be of help. It was probably the strangest phone call that the pub has had in a while.

Trystan

And the gable-ended building on the other side of the canal is The Red Lion!

I knew this one! We go there for meals. It's a very nice pub
Perhaps the Tame Otter would like a copy of your photo.

I think you're right - I've only been a couple of times, but I'm sure that I remember old photographs on the walls in there.
