Army Service Record
« on: Tuesday 06 September 16 15:04 BST (UK) »
My 2x great-grandfather David Sweeney served in the Royal Irish Rifles as a Corporal during World War One. He received the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and the Victory Medal. His registration number is 15-13679. I have been trying to find an Army Service record for him but I am wondering if they could have been destroyed.

His service/pension records don't appear to have survived, however you can see from his no. that he was in the 15th. (service) Batt.
Landed  Boulogne Oct. 1915 which is his 15 Star qualifying date.
The war diary is on Ancestry if you want to take a look or you can download it from TNA for £3.45.
I can tell you they went into it pretty early on with their first taste of the trenches on the 11th. Oct. at Puchevillers France.

The Batt. CO has furnished us with some good local trench maps which indicates where your man was on day one of the Somme offensive.
Couldn't have got much worse.
