how to find records for missing people presumed dead
« on: Tuesday 06 September 16 16:41 BST (UK) »
My Grandfather Nicholas Rodulfo disappeared in the early  1920s and I believe that my grandmother went through the legal procedures to have him declared dead.does anyone know how I could find records of this?

You sometimes see this in records relating to probate/administration. If Nicholas Rodulfo's wife wished to gain access to his estate, she may have done this. In the probate indexes the wording is something like 'presumed to have died on or after (date) in (location)' (sometimes, 'place unknown').

Note that if she remarried listing herself as a widow, that alone does not mean she had him formally declared deceased.

Building a background profile . . . . .

Nicolaus Rodulfo was in the 1911 census summary at
"Culross" Crescent Road Woodford

Family summarised as 3m 1f, so from marriage in 1909, 2x children in 2x years?

Swiss-born?

Nicolas was born in Trinidad. My grandmother always said that he disappeared in the congo. However he obviously did return to London. His actual first name was Louis and so sometimes appears as so named in records, however it gets confusing as several of his family were also called Louis. In 1920 he was admitted to Marylebone work house.I cannot decipher the reason for admittance.
Yes he had two children though the first one died as an infant and the second was my father

Was his brother's name not Louis going by the later census forms ?
