Bogus email from Find My Past
« on: Wednesday 07 September 16 03:57 BST (UK) »
I had two emails last week supposedly from Find My Past regarding a $1 subscription for a month.
When I rang FindMyPast they said they weren't running such a promotion.

Has anyone else had these emails?
cheers
Jilly

There has been a £1 for a month offer running for months. People have recently had success with it (you need a voucher code to get the discount).

As the offer has been running for so long I thought that FindMyPast might have forgotten about it and let it continue in error. Perhaps the person you spoke to didn't know about it, which seems odd considering you had emails from them.

Did you need to enter a code to get the £1 sub?

A related thread: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=752919.msg6041559#msg6041559

And an earlier (long) thread which was started in April (so the offer has been going since then):

If you wanted to try the offer, don't click on any links in the emails you received if you are unsure if they might be a scam, instead go to FindMyPast.co.uk and try to subscribe that way.

I signed up only yesterday for a month for £1, using the code ANCESTRYHOUR16
UK census content is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk  Transcriptions are my own.

OP posted her message at 03:57 BST, and mentioned a price of $1, rather than £1?

This implies that she is not a resident of the UK or Ireland; possibly Australia or NZ?
Maybe there are different offers there, and our "UK" discount codes won't work?

Thanks everyone for your help. Yes, I am from Australia and have sent an email to the Australian branch of FindMyPast to see if they had a promo going. Unfortunately I gave my bank details and am rather concerned and want to find out just who I gave them too. Usually I am SO cautious. Just goes to show you can get caught at the wrong moment. I didn't have a code so am hoping that is my saving grace.
cheers

Well  spotted KGarrad.

Jilly, so have you paid $1 for a month's subscription to FindMyyPast.com.au? Did you do this over  the phone?

I am in Australia too and have not heard of a $1 offer. I always subscribe to .co.uk and for this current offer the code ANCESTRYHOUR16 has worked several times for me.  :)

If you have any doubts about the sender of an email, look at the email address of the sender, you can see whether it is from the official site or not.

Jebber.

Or better still, look at the return address! (Sender's address can be faked).

If in doubt, click on "Reply" then check where the reply is going.
BUT . . . remember to cancel and don't hit "Send"!!
