STEVENS family in Whitechapel 1769-90
« on: Saturday 10 September 16 00:26 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Please could you tell me if I am looking at several families or one family on the move constantly?

Searching on FindMyPast:
I have parents Richard and Ann STEVENS in all these cases, and the dates look right for one family . . . but I don't know if they are or not  . . . .  What is the likelihood please?

Married 1669 in St Martin in the Fields, Westminster -  they are parents of my GGgrandmother Frances born Whitechapel we believe.

1771 Ann          Address given as  Ducking Pond

1773 Richard     Address given      Ducking Pond

1775  Frances    Address given as  Angle Alley

1776 Eliz' Mary      "         "           Court Street

1777 Susannah      "         "           B Lyons Yard

1778  Ann             "         "            Tongs Yard

1781 Thomas        "         "            Bakers Row

All help gratefully received.

Just found another baptism  also at St Marys Whitechapel.

Mary 1768    to Richard and Ann Stevens   address given as Tower Hamlets.   :-\ :-\ :-\

Born before parents marriage . . . nothing unusual in that in our family it seems.  :)   If she is our family.

Are all these addresses within coo-ee of each other?

Have also found original records for all these children -

Wiggy    :-\ ;)

Hi Wiggy

Did the first Ann born 1771 die, otherwise there are two children with the same name?

I have been trying to find a death for her, but no luck yet.  I did read in the Genealogical dictionary that sometimes children were named after godparents and hence the same name twice in one family . . . .  but I suspect I might yet turn up a death for the first Ann.

What do you think of the different addresses?  Are they all part of Tower Hamlets for example?  I have found other Richard and Ann combinations, but they are in different districts.

I've been trying to get a look at some old maps of the East London and Docklands to see the relationship of these places . . .   no luck yet though.

As regards the addresses, you can check the locations in Lockie’s Topography (1810).
https://archive.org/stream/lockiestopograph00lockiala#page/n3/mode/2up

Those that I can find on maps are mostly just off the Whitechapel Road. Ducking Pond (opposite the London Hospital) and Court Street are the furthest east, towards Mile End, while Angel Alley is right opposite the church, all within about 7 minutes’ walk. It certainly looks feasible that they are the same family.

I’d be less confident about the marriage at St Martin in the Fields – Westminster is a totally different milieu from Whitechapel, though that doesn’t rule it out. There’s another possible (late) marriage in 1773 at Shoreditch, to Ann HILL. But in reality they could have married anywhere – or not.

I've been trying to check addresses in Whitechapel, but I keep getting references to Jack the Ripper!

Is that date a typo Wiggy, otherwise it can't be the right one! I agree as well, not the right area if they lived all their lives around Whitechapel.

If the 1768 baptism of Mary (12 Aug 1768, St Mary Whitechapel, from Bell Yard) is also the same family, the marriage of Richard STEVENS and Ann HADEN at St Dunstan Stepney on 28 July 1764 might be a better bet -- bachelor/spinster, after banns, witnesses Edmund Jones, Richd Bradley. But it’s all somewhat speculative.

Thanks Groom and Bookbox.  I will look into those other marriages. This is a bit of a mystery as when the daughter Frances married, it occurred in Essendon Herts, to Isaac(or Dave)  Green.

I did wonder if they would have moved from the East End to Herts.   Just going to other computer to check birth of Isaac.

(Interesting though. The next generation Frances ended up back in East End before coming to Aus.)

Yes that date is a typo - 1769 was the marriage I found.
