Burfields that emmigrated to South Australia on Somersetshire 1839
« on: Saturday 10 September 16 06:34 BST (UK) »
Hi
I have Burfields in my family tree that appear to have emigrated from Sussex (Possibly Lewes) to South Australia on the Somersetshire arriving Port Adelaide 24 August 1839
from familyhistorysa.com.au
BURFIELD Harriet arrived in SA 1839-08-24 aboard Somersetshire from London
BURFIELD Robert, Mercy POTTER, Sarah, Ruth arrived in SA 1839-08-24 aboard Somersetshire from London
BURFIELD Samuel, Martha MITCHELL, Eliz arrived in SA 1839-08-24 aboard Somersetshire from London
BURFIELD William, Fanny (wife), Lucy, My, Jas, dau (b@sea) arrived in SA 1850-02-22 aboard Stratheden from London 1849-11-04 via Torbay
EXCELL John Wickens, Elizabeth BURFIELD, child, Eliz (12,2) arrived in SA 1840-08-11 aboard Lalla Rookh from London 40-04-26
GASTON Charles, Rebecca BURFIELD, Ann arrived in SA 1839-08-24 aboard Somersetshire from London
HERSEY James (d aft arr), Barbara BURFIELD, Eliz, Crln, Em, Louisa, Ellen, Sarah (d aft arr) arrived in SA 1839-08-24 aboard Somersetshire from London.

I am trying to ascertain if they are all part of the same family.
I believe Elizabeth and Rebecca are sisters with parents Samuel Burfield and Mary Colwill.
I have been trying to fin Robert's parents, he married Mercy Potter my GG Grand Aunt about 1837.

Help in proving or disproving any links would be much appreciated

Regards

Just to start off, there are these marriages:
John Wickens Excell = Elizabeth Burfield 18/11/32 St. Nicholas Brighton Sussex.
Charles Gaston = Rebecca Burfield 1839 St. Nicholas Brighton father Samual Burfield.
You probably have these but I'm just putting them up for others.
So Sussex seems to be where we should be looking.
Harriet, Robert, Samuel, Elizabeth, Rebecca & Barbara sailed on the same ship & this leads you to believe they are related.

Have you found a marriage ?

Something else you may already have:

Others to this couple:

Hi
Thank you
Unfortunately  I haven't been able to find a marriage for Robert and Mercy
I have found Christening for daughter Ruth (as Barfield) at St Nicholas Brighton.
Their other daughters were born in and died in South Australia.
Although there is Sarah mentioned in the list from family history sa however I cannot find any further mention of a daughter Sarah.
There are further connections as Gaston, McIntyre and Potter children have "Burfield" as a second name.
I was hoping St Nicholas at Brighton might by of assistance - however no additional records of assistance
Any assistance much appreciate

Well done you two.
Now the easy bit:
Children of James & Rebecca:
Elizabeth born: 18/3/1808
James b. 3/3/1810
Caroline b. 6/3/1811
Sarah b. 8/2/1813
Robert James b. 2/3/1815
Jane b. 23/2/1820
Henry b. 31/12/1821
All at the Wesleyan Chapel Eastbourne.
Robert was Baptised 18/1/1837 at the Chapel Royal Brighton.
The only one I've found on the census so far is Jane in St. Clement Dane's Westminster (1841).
She married Robert Agutter there in 1843.
Had 1 known child Robert James Agutter in 1844 Isle of Wight.
No sign after that.
Any sign of them in SA?

Hi
Regarding the children or Marcy Potter and Robert Burfield
Mostly sourced from CDs referred to often as Digger's CD plus genealogysa and trove
Ruth born 11/08/1838 Brighton died 10/07/1930 Eastwood South Australia she married William Arthur Miller 06/09/1862 and they had 6 children.
Mary Jane born 07/03/1841 Adelaide died Port Adelaide 11/06/1846
Hannah born 29/04/1843 Adelaide died Gawler 09/03/1921 married William Barnet and they had 10 children (The Bunyip Newspaper is from this family)
Mercy born 14/01/1845 Adelaide died 09/01/1848 Port Adelaide
Mary Ann born 02/11/1846 Port Adelaide died 20/02/1867 Port Adelaide
Mercy born 20/02/1852 Adelaide died 26/06/1881 Davenport she had 4 children with George Hall it is unclear if they were married and appears she died a couple days after the birth of Mercy on 24/06/1881 who died just a few months later, 16/11/1881. George took the 3 surviving daughters to Western Australia where he died in Freemantle in 1904.
familyhistorysa, genealogysa, trove, Digger's CDs, SA Council cemetery websites have assisted in gathering the descendants of Robert and Mercy.
However none of the information I have located to date links Robert with the other Burfields that arrived on the Somersetshire in 1839
In familysearch, ancestry and dustydocs I have search B?rfield  but no luck in finding Robert's baptism or his marriage to Mercy.  (This does assume they did marry)
They must have left England early 1839 as they arrived in Adelaide 24/08/1839
