John Martin emigrated to South Australia date unknown married Hannah Potter
« on: Saturday 10 September 16 06:50 BST (UK) »
Hi
My GG Grandmother Hannah Potter married John Martin in Adelaide South Australia on 18 January 1849.
Hannah had emigrated with her parents and siblings on Somersetshire arriving Adelaide 29 August 1839.
I am trying to trace John's history prior to marriage to Hannah.
He was born 29 August 1818, not sure where - family lore states Scotland - however this may now be incorrect.
He attended the Caledonian Asylum School and I have obtained the petition for entry by his father in July 1827.  However there are no details of birth attached to the petition.
I have found two siblings baptised in London
I also located James (John's father) some of his military records from findmypast which show he was invalided from 75 ft Regiment in Corfu on 24 May 1816 after just under 8 years his.
According to the same document James was born in Wigtown County Galloway, there is no year however possibly around 1785.
Mother Elizabeth born about 1788 believe Glasgow.
John was a Tea Dealer, grocer and commercial traveler before passing away at 48 years.

Any assistance on locating his birth/baptism would be appreciated

Regards

No trace of a John Martin born on August 29, 1818 but I think below may be the two births you may have found

Norval Douglas MARTIN was born on February 24, 1824, in Hackney, Middlesex
Father a painter abode Hackney Rd. However when he married his father was a Boot Maker, who also acted as a witness

Ann MARTIN was born on September 12, 1826, in London, London
Father a painter abode Hackney Rd.

Based on Norval’s middle name maybe these are the parents?
James Martin married Elizabeth Douglas 7 Jan 1819 St Bartholomew the Great, city of London.
One of the witnesses James Douglas.

1841 - St Giles Without Cripplegate

James Martin    55   Scotland   Painter
Elizabeth Martin    54   Scotland
Ann Martin    14   London

1851 – 14 Whiteiwas St. Cripplegate
James Martin    69   Born Ayrshire   Pensioner 75th Foot
Elizabeth Martin    57   Born Renfrewshire

Still in the area in 1861 James a Painter of houses, ages 78 & 75.

However whether the above is correct or no not?
I would mention however there was another couple in the same of the same name, that James was a carpenter and they had a son John in 1821?

The other thought is that maybe John was born before he married Elizabeth?

Hope some of this may help?

Hi Colin
Thank you
I had found Norval and Ann and possible/probable death for James.
The marriage is worth considering though
Thank you for taking the time to research and respond
Regards
Amanda

Hi
With Respect to Norval he also attended the Caledonian Asylum and have a copy of the petition for his application in  1833
I have Norval's christening and his marriage to Jane Glass
There is Norval who died in 1855 - I applied for Death Certificate however it wasn't him.
I am not positive however Jane may have kept her single name and returned to Scotland before Scottish Census of 1851 with child David John Martin.
I cannot find a death for Norval - however maybe he stopped using Norval and used Douglas as a first name.
1851 Census has a Douglas Martin born Ireland living the Swan Family ( I think this is probably his sister and brother-in-law)
1861 Census Martin D N unmarried bootmaker living in Southwark
After this I have not been able to locate further.
On David Martin's marriage certificate for 11 July 1872 in Glasgow is father as deceased whether this is correct or not unknown.
I tried following Ann and David Swan last location was 1861 Census.
Naturally it is possible they migrated - however searches so far have not revealed anything further.
I would be most appreciative of any further information
Regards
Amanda

Hi Geoff
Thank you for the photos
I now have a new avenue for investigation.
I have another family bible that was completed by Hannah rather than John
Kind Regards
