Searching for PRESSON and EVANS Families pre 1861
« on: Monday 12 September 16 20:01 BST (UK) »
I would appreciate some assistance in finding any information about my 2nd Great Grandmother, Margaret Presson, born around 1838 in Penbryn, Cardiganshire, Wales according to various Census. She married William Evans around 1859 and I have found both William and Margaret in the Wales Census from 1861 through to 1911. However I have been unable to locate a record of their marriage, or the birth of either Margaret or William. According to the census, William was born about 1834 in Llangranog, Cardiganshire. It would also be helpful if I couldfind them on the 1841 and 1851 Census.
Thanks in anticipation.

Hi Cherryl,

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

Is the name Presson on a birth cert of one of William and Margaret's children?

Just wondering if the surname could be Preston.

JJ

different 1851 at home
Cefn Cwrt, Llangranog HO107/282 folio 518 pg 20
Evan Evabs head 48 farmer of 110 acres employing 2 labs b. Llandysilio
Mary wife 49
Elizabeth dau 23
John son 20
William son 17
Evan son 14
Thomas son 12
Mary dau 6
Mary Jones servant 19 b. Troedyraur
Elias Jones servant 13
all born Llangranog except where noted

If William & Margaret married locally, it should have registered as Newcastle Emlyn. There's a page on FreeBmd with 2 brides & only one groom in dec qtr 1858, one bride being Margaret Harries, but no missing William Evans that I can see as yet.

Hi J Jen
Thanks for your email. I have had a quick look through my source material and cannot find anything at this stage to substantiate the Presson surname, only what I heard from my mother many years ago. I am currently away from home and when I return at the end of this month, plan on ordering a number of certificates in the hope of confirming (or otherwise) Margaret's maiden name. In the menatime, I will follow up on the suggestions regarding Evans from Osprey.
Kind regards
Cherryl

Thanks so much, Osprey, for the comprehensive information. It will certainly keep me busy for a while. As you will see from my email to J Jen above, I need to do some more investigating to verify the maiden name of Margaret Evans. Any suggestions in this regard would be very welcome.
Kind regards

I hve been digging around on welsh newspapers online to see if that would help. Not so far for a marriage, but by searching for Tredwr, llangranog, their address in 1861, I;ve come across a few interesting articles in welsh which suggest William Evans and family were thrown off by their landlord Cadben Jordan, c1869, for not voting as he would wish in an election

this might explain his occupation in 1871 - "formerly a farmer"

I was just checking for any baptisms for the children of William & Margaret, but nothing showing even though Llangranog baptisms are on one of the main sites.

If you're going to order a birth cert, your best bet would be to go for one of the children with a less common name first name as Evans is not unusual in the area or where you can be more sure of their age. So, on the 1871 census there's a Sarah M who is 5 months old, this registration more than likely

Sarah Miriam Evans dec qtr 1870 Newcastle Emlyn vol 11b pg 21
or
David Elias Evans sept qtr 1868 Newcastle Emlyn vol 11b pg 20
or
William Owen Evans march qtr 1872 Newcastle Emlyn vol 11b pg 32

I don't know where in the world you are. If you're ordering from outside the UK, order from the GRO as they're the cheapest anyway & there's no charge for postage,
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

You can order direct from the registrars in Cardigan, but they may need SAEs.
Hope this helps and post on this thread when you find out her maiden name if you need help to find the marriage registration.

Mabel, that could explain why he moved to Llangoedmore to farm & in a later census was the man from the Pru!
