I notice that your couple were listed on the same fiche and page as another SURMON.  Is he a relative?

Mary Ann Surmon appears to have been in and out of Islington Workhouse  a few times in the 1884-86 period  and the last admission I can see is on 12 Feb 1886.

There is a death of a Mary Ann Surmon in the March Qtr 1886 Islington 1b 211.   Her age on FreeBMD is listed as 5 but on the image it looks more like 58 that has been partly erased.  So her admission to the workhouse may have been due to illheath.

Thank-you to everyone and in particular to Kay99 for lots of great information for me to follow up on but I haven't been able to see where John C and Mary Ann were living in Alma Rd, Edmonton in 1861 or when Mary Ann was in living at John St Islington in 1871.
Also haven't found the entry for Mary Ann and Francis Connors marriage yet and am still looking for the Workhouse entries for Mary Ann.  For people like me who are still fairly new at this genealogy perhaps a link to the information found would be so helpful as I've spent so long searching for each item. Having said that I am so thankful for all the help and suggestions and the search goes on.
Sandiehawk.

Hi Sandiehawk - Sorry I didn't provide links.  Which sites are you using to search??  The surname is so easily mispelt!!

The census details I posted were from Ancestry but I checked FamilySearch which is free for you to access and found the following
John C and wife Mary Ann Surmon on Family Search in 1861 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M7XB-VWK
Mary Ann Surmon in 1871 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VB6X-4DD
and Mary Ann Surmon in 1881 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q279-VT99

The marriage of Francis Connor to Mary Ann Murrell is on Ancestry http://www.rootschat.com/links/01ihe/
Mary Ann's possible workhouse admissions are also on Ancesty http://www.rootschat.com/links/01ihd/

If you don't have access to the last two I can send you the details

Kay

Kay99,  you are an angel for sending those links!  I think I've found everything now. I found some of them on FamilySearch which I do use and even though I have an Ancestry tree, I couldn't get the marriage for Mary Ann and Francis or the workhouse entries.  I'm doing a happy dance here just now. I've been really stuck on Mary Ann for so long and with your help I now have some answers (and more family) Thank-you again,
Sandiehawk.
