Parish Records in Latin? Margarita Draycot / Margaret Draycott
« on: Tuesday 13 September 16 10:22 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

So I've been looking for the birth of my great x5 grandmother Margaret Draycott. She was born circa 1797, according to censuses, in Gateshead.

I searched for this on a couple of sites and the only thing that came up was a birth for Margarita Draycot in Newcastle in 1796. Bit odd I thought. I searched for this name and then the only thing this name produced was a transcript of Newcastle Upon Tyne Registers, and under the year 1796 it read as follows:

Die 7° [? Feb :] Martii nata et die 2° ejusdem Mensis 1796 baptizata
fuit [Christend not baptized above] Margarita Draycot
filia Jos : et Mariae Draycot (olim Harrison). Patrinus fuit Gulielmus
Heaton, Matrina Catharina Draycot : a me Jac : Worswick
Miss° Ap e ° . Gateshead, St Marys Parish.
[30] Die 12° Martii 1796 nata et die 3°

Now I'm no expert in what appears to be Latin but I would say I am safe to assume that Margarita Draycot is indeed my Margaret Draycott?

My question is, is it normal for Latin registers to 'Latinise' names? If so, may need some help on the other names!

Thanks  ;D

Google translate gives:

Day 7 ° [? Jan :] of the month of March 1796 was born , and was baptized the same day of the 2 °
was [ Christend not baptized above] Margarita Draycot
the daughter of Jos and Mary Draycot ( once Harrison ). The sponsor was William
Heaton , godmother was Catharine Draycot: a me Jac : Worswick
Miss ° e °. Gateshead, St Marys Parish.

Which makes sense, but would Jos be short for Joseph?
Thanks!

One more thing in 1851 George Draycott is with George REDSHAW, a Widower, Shipwright/Publican,and described as his Brother. Looks like it should be Brother in Law;

Marriage;
31 May 1841
All Saints, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland
Elizabeth DRAYCOTT to George REDSHAW
Fathers GEORGE Draycott and GEORGE Redshaw
(Familysearch.Org)

1841 we have;
George Redshaw, 40, Publican
Elizabeth Redshaw, 30

So looks to me that Jos may be Geo and Margaret/Elizabeth/George are Siblings;

EG;
Eliz. DRAYCOTTE 26 September 1807 Newcastle to Geo. Draycotte/   Maria Herrison
Geo. DRAYCOTTE 8 Feb 1801, St Andrew, Newcastle to    Geo. Draycotte/Mariae

Herrison likely Harrison

There is also a CATHE Draycot 1803 Newcastle , Father Geo. Draycott Mother Maria Herrnson
