Hi there,
So I've been looking for the birth of my great x5 grandmother Margaret Draycott. She was born circa 1797, according to censuses, in Gateshead.
I searched for this on a couple of sites and the only thing that came up was a birth for Margarita Draycot in Newcastle in 1796. Bit odd I thought. I searched for this name and then the only thing this name produced was a transcript of Newcastle Upon Tyne Registers, and under the year 1796 it read as follows:
Die 7° [? Feb :] Martii nata et die 2° ejusdem Mensis 1796 baptizata
fuit [Christend not baptized above] Margarita Draycot
filia Jos : et Mariae Draycot (olim Harrison). Patrinus fuit Gulielmus
Heaton, Matrina Catharina Draycot : a me Jac : Worswick
Miss° Ap e ° . Gateshead, St Marys Parish.
[30] Die 12° Martii 1796 nata et die 3°
Now I'm no expert in what appears to be Latin but I would say I am safe to assume that Margarita Draycot is indeed my Margaret Draycott?
My question is, is it normal for Latin registers to 'Latinise' names? If so, may need some help on the other names!
Thanks
