English Death Certificate 1970
« on: Wednesday 14 September 16 20:54 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Not used to searching English records so I have this query.

What information would an English Death Certificate show for around 1970 ?

She was a married woman so obviously her husband but would her parents names also be included ?

Thanks

The name and status of the informant would be shown.

Current  or normal place and address of residence.

Hi Dorrie,

From reading online;

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Register_Office_for_England_and_Wales

"Death certificates issues by the GRO are printed on a black and purple form and give the following information:

the registration district and sub-district
the entry number;
name of the deceased, their supposed age at death, and occupation
the cause of death
date and place of death
the informant and their relationship to the deceased
the name of the registrar;
from 1969 death certificates also record the date and place of birth of the deceased and, if applicable, the maiden name of a woman.
Certificates issued in other parts of the United Kingdom contain different or additional information and have a different format."

So not changed much, no parents, no spouse unless the spouse was the informant?

But under 'occupation' it may have wife of, or widow of [ name of spouse] for a female.

On my Grandmother's Death Certificate from 1951 (under Rank or Profession) it states:

Formerly the wife of ------  -------- from whom she obtained a divorce.

I guess some Registrars were kinder to family history researchers than others!

My Mother's Death Certificate from last December has (under Occupation and usual address):

Widow of ------  -------, Toolmaker

My brother was asked for that information when he registered the death, although there isn't actually a column for it.

Being late as 1970, it may take time, but using the age at death in the GRO death index, look for deaths giving relations names of the deceased or obituaries in newspapers, address in local telephone directories, electoral registers, Will probate records to find the husband or wife's first name. The marriage certificate if it can be found - will give the fathers name. If the deceased had known childrens age, their birth certificate will name the deceased's  spouse if the deceased was married.

WW2 marriages did have couples who married from all parts of the UK and abroad so it could be difficult finding a marriage.
In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth
