Weighand Family
« on: Thursday 15 September 16 00:37 BST (UK) »
Hi, this is my first post here. I've been researching my family tree for about 3 weeks, but can't get anywhere on my fathers mothers side.

My grandmothers name was Elizabeth Jane Weighand, born April 1934. As far as I know, she was born in Scotland (someone else with her on their tree has her birth in Edinburgh).

She died October 1988 and is buried in Canley Crematorium, Coventry. Her birth certificate lists her as Elizabeth Jane H S Hayden (no idea what the H S stands for).

She married Bernard John Hayden (b. May 1937 Brighton - d. June 2016 Coventry), and had 1 daughter and 4 sons (2 of which are also deceased).

I know at some point, they lived in Hong Kong, because that is where my father was born. Though I cannot find his or his youngest brothers birth certificates.

Her brother was Peter Connor Callander Weighand (b. Oct 1944 Stirlingshire, Scotland - Apr 2010 Coventry) and he is buried next to her. He married Christine Carmichael* (living) in 1979 and they have 1 son (living).

I have a hunch that her father (my great grandfather) was called Peter Weighand due to someone else's tree and things my father has told me. He always told me that my grandmothers father was born in Germany and came to Scotland as a child.
The other tree also has her mother listed as Janet Carmichael*. (*I was told that Peter CC and Christine were cousins).

There is a record for a Peter Weighand in the 1901 Scottish census (b. abt 1896 Edinburgh) in a childrens home in Corstorphine, Midlothian.
In the same home is a William (Wm) Weighand (b. abt 1893 Edinburgh).

In the military records (WW1 service medal and award rols), there is a Peter Callender Weighand (Reg number 542688, Labour Corps, previously Highland Light Infantry) and a Peler* C Weighand (medal rolls index card - same reg, *copying error).

For William Weighand, there are many military records too: WW1 Pension records (b. abt 1892, Midlothian) Reg. number 17920, Highland Light Infantry (Father, William Weighand).
Service medal and award rolls (The Royal Scots Lothian Regiment, Reg number 250786 prev 5th R. Scots 2902)
Willhim* Weighand - Medal rolls index card (5/6 Battalion Royal Scots, 250786, 2902) *copying error
Military history sheet - Living in Bounyreg, father William Weighand.

The only real links I have to this Peter Weighand are the unusual surname, my fathers info and the middle/family name Callander/Callender.

I cannot find her or her brothers birth certificate. No parental information (names, birth certs. This will be extra difficult if the father was put in a childrens home). No parents marriage certificate, nor one for her and my grandfather.  If I follow German records, there are so many "Weighand" variations.

Apologies for this being so long. But any help would be appreciated. My father and his side have always been very sporadic in my life, so I cannot ask them to tell me anything they might know. This has me pulling my hair out  ???

FindMyPast have overseas births - under British National Armed Forces Births I found 2 Hayden births in Hong Kong - as these are living people cannot post full names on here but using initials there is a P V in 1964 and a M C in 1965.

Do you have your grandmothers birth certificate or have you just find her listed in the index on Scotlands People?   The full birth certificate which you can purchase should list her other names in full plus will also confirm if her parents were indeed a Peter Weighand and Janet Carmichael.

This couple married 21/3/1925 Stirling - Peter Callender Weighand 28, son of William Weighand (dec'd) and Margaret nee Callender (dec'd), and Janet Hood Crichton Holms, widow, nee Carmichael 22, dau. of Andrew Gibson Carmichael, coal miner and Annie nee Crichton.

William bc.1853 Newbattle, Midlothian married Margaret Callender bc.1852 Dalkeith, Midlothian in 1876.

Purchasing credits on SP will enable you to view certificates which give far more information than English ones do.

I haven't looked for the trees so don't know if the above info. ties in with what you have found - William bc.1853 was a widower by 1901 (think he himself died 1922) - his wife Margaret died 1897 and this no doubt accounts for why the 2 youngest boys were in a childrens home, he had to work and care for his other children and unable to look after 2 young ones too.    However, in 1901 he is in Edinburgh too with 4 of his children plus a married daughter and her 3 children.

According to census said William was the son of a William  (bc.1813 Liberton, Midlothian) and Hellen (bc.1824 Cookham, Edinburgh) - up to this point there is nothing at all to indicate any connection to Germany and if there indeed was one then it has to be much further back.

Annette

PS Peter was born 1895 and William 1892 - both births are in the index on SP.

I don't have time right now to look into this properly, but a bit of advice regarding online trees - you are advised to your your own research, tracing backwards and purchasing the appropriate certificates.

Scottish certificates contain huge amounts of information.

Online trees can be wrong and as you have found, can just complicate and confuse matters. The only thing they can be useful for is if someone has provided an image of a particular certificate you require, then it can be useful to use the information it contains and save your the expense of purchasing it.

Are you familiar with the website Scotland's People? (aka SP)

Also keep in mind that with a surname like Weighland, that it might be worth considering alternative spellings such as Wayland (there will undoubtedly be a number of others).

Good luck.

Thank you all so much for your help.
I had not heard of SP before, but will now sign up, as it seems it will be vital to my search.

FindMyPast have overseas births - under British National Armed Forces Births I found 2 Hayden births in Hong Kong - as these are living people cannot post full names on here but using initials there is a P V in 1964 and a M C in 1965.

That's definitely my father and his brother. I have been using Ancestry and never for a second thought it would be missing so much information.  :'( Am still so new to all this.
Everything that I had found I have listed in my original comment, so the extra info you have provided is a big help.

I have been doing my own research and tend not to bother with other peoples' trees as I've often found inconsistencies with them. But with my grandmother, I was very stuck, and wondered if anyone would have a starting point or perhaps something that I had missed.

Thank you all again  :)

There is no one site that has everything, despite the media advertising from one particular site which seems to suggest they have it all!

As you become more experienced with researching you'll find out which sites have the particular records you need and find yourself flitting from one site to another on a regular basis.

All part of the fun.

You should find the information you are looking for on Scotland's People. It is a credit based system, so you need to be fairly certain you have found the right certificate before using credits to view it, otherwise you can plough through the credits quickly. SP

If you have any questions about your Scottish research or how to use SP please start a new thread on the Scotland Board. There are many excellent Scottish researchers who will be happy to help, and Annette has already made a start for you. :)

You can also use FamilySearch, which is free. https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list#page=1&region=UNITED_KINGDOM_IRELAND (scroll down the page for Scottish records) Not every event is on there but you can get lucky. If you find the correct person you can then purchase the certificate from SP which will give you more information.

Good luck.

Reading about the credits based system did confuse me a little, so visiting the Scotland Board might be a necessity.

Again, thanks everyone. I'm really excited to get further with my research  ;D
