help in tracing family
« on: Friday 16 September 16 16:25 BST (UK) »
Hi I am a new member and have hit a bit of a stumbling block in my research.

My family name is Cox and descend from the Weald of Kent Frittenden, Smarden, Biddenden, Marden and surrounding areas including Sissinghurst castle.  My Grandmother was a Packham-Wilding from Headcorn her father was adopted I am finding it extremely difficult on finding anything on her line, I presume the Packhams were the adoptive family, I don't know my GGrandfathers first name and also my G uncle lived and died in Oban after the RAF and believe he only used Albert Packham.

On my maternal line its even harder I have never had any information from my grandparents all I know is my Nannas surnames names, Hogan and Kelly form County Durham

Any tips and pointers would be greatly received and even getting in touch with family.
Cox: Kent, Packham - Wilding, Hogan & Kelly: County Durham, Gurr: Kent / Netherlands

I assume this is the marriage of your grandparents, so kn ow you know the names of two of your four grandparents

Name:   Gladys A Packham-wilding
Date of Registration:   Jan-Feb-Mar 1947
Registration district:   Maidstone
Inferred County:   Kent
Spouse:   Wiliam F Cox

What you can do now if you have not got it is get the marriage certificate to find the names of their parents. You could also search the death indexes to find when they dies and thus calculate their approximate birth dates and then search the indexes for suitable births

Until you get back before 1911 it is a bit more difficult to find things so it has to be a step at a time

Most of the indexes are online at www.freebmd.org.uk (note this only gives very few details and you may need to buy the certificates to get more details)

***************************
This is possibly Gladys' birth

Births Sep 1921
Wilding    Gladys A P    Dines    Hollingbourn    2a   1797
********
This is the possible marriage of Gladys' parents

Marriages Sep 1915
Dines    Amy    Wilding    Hollingbourn    2a   2636
Wilding    Albert    Dines    Hollingbourn    2a   2636
******
There is this possible birth for Amy

Births Mar 1889
Dines    Amy Jane        Hollingbourn    2a   761
(Amy died 1975)

Amy's parents are Edward Dines and Elizabeth Ellen Burden
********

Albert Wilding 1890-1971 may also be Herbert Thomas Wilding-Packham (born Herbert Thomas Packham) possibly the adopted son of James Charles Wilding and Clara Elizabeth Hinkley ? This will need to be checked in depth

hope that helps for starters
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

It is actually Albert PACKMAN, adopted son, 9, born Eltham, Lond[on]

In 1891 he is also with the WILDING family as Bertie PACKMAN, Nurse Child, 7 months, born Elham, Kent

Albert Wilding 1890-1971 may also be Herbert Thomas Wilding-Packham (born Herbert Thomas Packham) possibly the adopted son of James Charles Wilding and Clara Elizabeth Hinkley ? This will need to be checked in depth

Gladys Amy Packham-Wilding dob 15 Mar 1921
She was married in March 1947 at the same time as Dorothy L (her sister became Cooper) her other sister Helen.

I am a bit confused with the Herbert / Albert I know GGranddad was Navy and Albert RAF, Nan always said she regretted not visiting Alberts grave in Scotland recently my dad told me it was in Oban but records that match with him show death in either London or Bobbing

I can't thank you all enough for your help so far

As confirmed by his navy record (given in the links supplied by Dundee) Herbert Thomas Packham was indeed the later known Albert Wilding.   He clearly enlisted in the navy under his 'legal' name of Herbert Thomas Packham shown as born 15/8/1890 Folkestone, Kent.    His wife is shown as Amy Wilding.   On the 1939 Register originally written as Packham but altered to Wilding!!

So born as HTP - Packham being his legal name - and 'adopted' (no formal adoptions before 1927) by James and Clara referred to already - known by them (and he subsequently brought up as) Albert Wilding.   He and wife Amy Jane Dines shown in BMD index as having the following children:

Herbert P. Wilding b.14/5/1916 - this is the g/uncle you refer to as 'Albert' (like his father) and he did indeed die in Oban in 1978, death registered as Herbert Packham Wilding (only to be found on Scotlands People website).
Ellen Clara P. Wilding b.1918 (obviously 2nd name after Albert's adoptive mother)
Glady Amy P.    "       b.1921
Dorothy Lillian P.  "    b.1927
May D. Wilding          b.1930

So, to pursue the Packham line you will need to purchase a copy of Herbert Thomas Packham's birth certificate to establish who his parents were (possible he may have been illegitimate).

Amy Jane Dines was born 11/12/1888 Ulcombe, Kent, the daughter of an Edward and Elizabeth (full names already given) - by 1901 they were living in Headcorn.

So, your maternal great grandparents are Herbert Thomas Packham b.15/8/1890 (known later as Albert Wilding - Wilding being adoptive name) and Amy Jane Dines b.11/12/1888.

You say you also cannot proceed with your maternal line only knowing surnames Hogan and Kelly from Co. Durham.   If your mother is the JK (mmn H) born 1954 West Hartlepool then it appears her parents were John Kelly and Ada Hogan.    Ada was presumably a widow (or divorced) when she married John Kelly in March quarter 1950 West Hartlepool as her names shown as Ada Williams/Hogan.   There is indeed a marriage of an Ada Hogan to a John G D Williams in March quarter 1941 West Hartlepool.

Ada Kelly (nee Hogan) died in 1985 North Cleveland - her birthdate 10/12/1920 shows mmn as Stimson.   An Edward Hogan married Lena Pentney Stimson in Dec.qtr.1909 Hartlepool.   Edward Hogan b.10/11/1887, d.1961 West Hartlepool (census shows he was son of a Thomas Hogan bc.1851 Ireland and his second wife Ellen Smith, bc.1864 West Hartlepool).

Lena Pentney Stimson was born 26/6/1890, d.1948 West Hartlepool - her birth actually registered as Lena Eleanor P. Stimson in 1890, and census shows she was dau. of a George H. Stimson and wife Mary A.

As to John Kelly - the name is far too common and there were 3 different ones who died in Cleveland (like wife Ada) and impossible to say which one could be him, so you will definitely need a copy of his and Ada's marriage certificate to establish his age and name of father.

You may want to purchase some other certificates to confirm my findings above but think I've figured it correctly.

At least you now know the names of your great grandparents - Herbert Thomas Packham (aka Albert Wilding) and Amy Jane Dines.

Plus, if I've identified you mother correctly (fingers crossed) then you have names on your maternal grandparents lines of Kelly and Hogan which should enable you to proceed with this now.

Good luck.

Annette
