Holmes family that emigrated from Ballymena, Antrim, to Canada c. 1830
« on: Friday 16 September 16 23:12 BST (UK) »
My mother's Holmes family left Ballymena for Canada via Cork, according to their lore. They listed themselves as Canadian citizens of Irish origin as late as the 1901 Canadian census. They were Presbyterians and settled near Renfrew in the Ottawa Valley. I am trying to determine the names of those who came. It is likely they brought children with them. It is unlikely that they went to the United States first, though other relatives almost certainly did.

In the1901 census where my great-grandfather William Holmes is listed as head of household, a Samuel homes is given. I assume that he was William's father, but I don't know. From the age given, he was probably born in 1824, and probably in Ballymena, since the family had not yet come to Canada.

One of William's children is a Samuel. too. Other sons are Lawrence, Roy, James, and Gordon. I don't know how many of these names would have come from the Greene side of the family.

Another elderly member of the family is a woman named Arvilla Grant, also of age to have been born in Ireland. I think she is probably not William's mother, since her name would have been given as Holmes.

Thanks for commenting
