Canadian Records
« on: Saturday 17 September 16 01:54 BST (UK) »
I have an ancestor - Arthur Burke b:1890 - who left Liverpool in July 1929 on the "Duchess Of Atholl" - her maiden voyage - bound for Montreal, with Canada given as his place of future residence. Problem is, he does not seem to have arrived there - the Montreal records have no record of him being admitted and I cannot find a marriage or death for him in Canada at any date.Could he have been lost overboard? This happened to another family member in Victorian times, but in British waters and his death was fully recorded. Given that the Wall Street crash happened a few months after his arrival could he have returned? The Canadian shipping records are a bit vague on travel to Britain. Any suggestions or advice appreciated.

On Ancestry I have found Canadian passenger list showing an Arthur Burke born 1890 in Australia who left Liverpool on the Atholl and arrived in Canada on 19-Jul-1929.

So he landed.  No obvious other records for him - might find him when the 1931 census is opened.

Regards, Linda from Canada

Thank you Linda. This information explains a lot, eg. why I have never found him in the English census or birth records. I am awaiting his marriage cert which may answer some questions. He left a wife and five children in England and it looks as though he may have been on his way back to Australia. Glad that you also could not find him in Canadian records - I have had huge success in the past with them  and was dismayed when I could not find him.
thanks,  john.

An Arthur Leslie Burke of Sydenham died 13 October 1942 - noting that further passenger lists gave an address in Lambeth.

A newspaper notice of his death in The Hull Daily Mail, "on October 13 1942, Eliot Lodge Sydenham Hill, Arthur Leslie Burke, after a long illness borne with great courage."
