At a brick wall on my grandad John David mcglinchy birth surname Balfour all I know he was born in 1906 not sure if he was born in the uk or was sent to Canada apparently on his marriage certificate he has named Kenneth mcglinchy as the father and also served in the Second World War as mcglinchy but later changed his name back to Balfour his birth surname after he married my nan in 1933 he never spoke about his family much to my my nan or his children, I'm am now beginning to think he may have been adopted or possibly sent to Canada with Barbados but can't even find a marriage or any information for Kenneth mcglinchy here or in Canada anyone got any ideas, thanks ann

Could you possibly supply the following information?

1.  Kenneth's occupation on John's marriage certificate and is there any indication that Kenneth was deceased.

2.  John's occupation.

3.  John's wife's name and

4.  Where were they living at the time they married?

These extra pieces of information may assist in finding out more about John.  Can't guarantee anything though.

Kenneth mcglinchy was an engineer on my grandads marriage to my nan ann emma betts in 1933

My grandad John David Mcglinchy/Balfour served in the army with the surname mcglinchy then later changed his name to Balfour after they were married but had some children with the surname mcglinchy and some with Balfour but later they had there names changed to Balfour


They lived in Brentwood Essex

Apparently he had links in Ireland but not sure if there was any connection because that's where he travelled to when he later Canada as a young man when he joined the army

Apparently my great grandad served in the war and lost part of his arm


We don't know much about my grandad John David mcglinchy/Balfour as he never spoke much about his family to my nan that's why I'm finding it hard to trace him unless he was adopted in Canada

Well for the moment I have found they had seven children, five as McGlinchy between 1934 and 1943 and two as Balfour in 1945 and 1947.

There is a tree on Ancestry which suggests that John was born in Ontario, Canada.  Is that your tree or someone else's?

Hi yes I do have one no one but I don't have a mother or father on him on my tree because a relative who is related to the birth mother and father on the other trees for him confirmed that they wasn't related  as we cannot find a birth for him in Canada or here a historian messaged me to say that it is possible he may have been a Barbados child unless I can find out otherwise I have been trying to search and hoped to find for the last 5 years a living relative and leaving messages on genealogy boards it make it hard as he never spoke much about his family to my aunts and uncle those days they never spoke about thing like we do now regards Ann

I assume you mean he may have been a Barnardo's child?  Have you considered writing to them and asking them if they have any records of John?

Have you thought about obtaining his war service records?  Does anyone in the family know whether he was in the British or Canadian army/navy/raf?

They may give some indication of where he was born etc.
