David Polhill Greene
« on: Saturday 17 September 16 23:21 BST (UK) »
Hello.
I am trying to find some information on my 4xgreat grandfather, David Polhill Greene, who died in 1854 aged about 70 and was born in Sevenoaks, Kent.  He lived latterly in London.
I believe there may be a connection with Oliver Cromwell's family through Cromwell's granddaughter, Elizabeth Ireton, who married Thomas Polhill in about 1674.
The name pops up with DP Greene's great-great-grandson, Alfred Polhill Greene 1881-1970, and may also be part of HIS son's name - John Alfred P Greene 1908-1991.
I wonder if this is suggesting that Polhill was of significance historically in the Greene family rather than just a family tradition?
Any information would be gratefully received.
Richard.

Welcome to rootschat, Richard.

Why do you believe you are connected to Cromwell - family rumour, or something more substantial?

Have you attempted to research the family of Elizabeth and Thomas Polhill?

Added:
They appear to have had 8 children, so quite a few descendants.

Are these related to you (does not fit with Sevenoaks)?
Thomas Green baptised 1st  April 1787 in St Mary Ealing Middlesex, parents David Polhill Green and Mary

Added:
Also Charles, 1790.

There is a David Polhill Green as an Excise Officer in 1798 Hammersmith according to Ancestry.

Also a David Polhill Green buried on 2nd May 1803 in St George the Martyr, from Blackfriars road.

I cant find a baptism for David Polhill Green around the 1780's, but possibly matching with the 1803 burial and the children named so far (there was also a Charles Green baptised 4 Apr 1790 at St Mary, Ealing, son of David Polhill Green & Mary), there is this Indenture dated 2nd December 1767:

David Polhill Greene, son of Jonathan Greene late of the parish of St Bottolph without Aldgate, Gentleman, Deceased, doth put himself apprentice to John Cardell, citizen & clothworker of London, to serve from the Day of the Date hereof, until the full End and Term of Seven Years...

This is followed by a memorandum that on Saturday 7th September 1771, the Mayor and Aldermen of  the Guildhall of the City of London adjudged that David Polhill Greene be fully discharged from the apprenticeship with John Cardell (who I think had died) and be turned over to someone else to serve the rest of his apprenticeship.

On what looks like the rear of the Indenture it then says "Afterwards to wit on 7th September 1767 And this day by virtue of the Annexed Judgment turned over to Jno Williams Founder of the same trade"

The 1767 must surely be a mistake and should be 1771.. ?

Looking for his father, Jonathan, there is a marriage bond dated 18 Jun 1744 for Jonathan Greene, bachelor of the parish of St Botolph, gentleman, and Elizabeth Cardell spinster.

Added:  Oops, didn’t read the second document!  Jonathan was 24 & Elizabeth was 21 & upward and from the parish of St Mary, Whitechappel (sic).  They intended to marry either at the parish church of St Bennet near Pauls Wharf, St Ann Aldersgate or St Catherine near the Tower Garden.

I cant figure out the connection as yet, if indeed there is one, but I wonder if this marriage fits:

03 Jun 1782, Chevening, Kent, David Greene & Mary Rigglesford.

London Metropolitan Archives has references to George Polhill & Charles Polhill owning land in Chevening from the 1740's onward.

This thread working on same man:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=1991.0

gives:
'I contacted the Sevenoaks Library and for a small fee the Archive Librarian carried out a search of the Sevenoaks Parish records for me, based on the approximate year of DPG's birth that I gave her. I'm very happy to say that she managed to find a baptismal record for 'David son of David Polhill GREEN' on 4th October 1782.

On the basis of an IGI entry - David GREENE married Mary RIGGLESFORD 3rd June 1782 Chevening, Kent - the Librarian kindly made a further search of the Chevening Parish records and was able to send me a transcribed copy of the page in question.'
