Tracing my Sampson Roots
« on: Sunday 18 September 16 14:33 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace my Sampson Roots. The earliest I can go back is my Grandfather Thomas Sampson was first employed by the WL&WR Railways in 1866. He gave his age as 16.

He was Station Master at Fethard, Tralee County Kerry and Listowel County Kerry and retired in 1925 after servicing for 59 years.

Thomas Sampson married Catherine Fitzgerald in St. Michaels Church in 1874 they had John, Bridget, Martin, Joseph and Thomas Bridget became an Nun and took the name Sister Kiernan she passed away in South Africa in 1913. Martin was station Master at Milltown County Kerry. Thomas was an Auditor on the Tralee Dingle line. Martin Sampson spelt his surname Samson and in latter years served as pump house supertendent on the Lartigue Listowel at the same time as his father Thomas Sampson was Station Master there. Catherine Sampson nee Fitzgerald passed away and Thomas Sampson married a Margaret Baker in Cork, her Mother was also Margaret and her Father was James Baker who on retiring lived in Kanturk, County Cork. Margaret was an organist at St. John's Catholic Church in Tralee and also was a member of a musical society. She had two children Herbert Joseph Sampson (Bertie) and Anthony Joseph Gerard Sampson (Tony) my father.

When Margaret passed on she was buried in Rathass Cemetry in Tralee.

My Grandfather then married a widow Ellen Beary nee Ellen Maguire of Listowel County Kerry. They had no children.

Joseph Sampson ended his days as a Sexton in a Chatholic Church in San Fransico USA.

I do not know where my Grandfather Thomas Sampson was born or if he had any siblings. He may have had a sister Margaret or his Mothers name could have been Margaret. My Great Grandfathers Christian name was John. Where my Great parents lived or died I did not know. This is my quest tracing my Roots and hopeful that some Sampson survived.

Thomas Sampson Grandson

Have you got an occupation for his father John, from the marriage?

Sorry it's on his marriage to Ellen

A farmer, died before 1909.
That might make Tipperary more likely.
There are Sampsons in Tipperary South Riding in Griffith's Valuation but also some in Limerick although not I think in the City.

On his earlier marriage to Margaret Baker 1896 his father is not marked as deceased, which is no guarantee but one other on the page is marked and a few on the page before so it looks good that he may well be still alive.

Looking for a death between those two dates 1896 to 1909,
One in Tipperary is a shoemaker,
Two in Limerick (Kilmallock Reg Districk) one is two young the other is a Farmer (reduced) from Ballingarry aged 75 died 1903 https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1903/05650/4590506

Possible, an area to search at least.

A transcription of the 1874 marriage for Thomas Sampson and Catherine Fitzgerald says that the groom's father John Sampson was dead and it gave his occupation as clerk.

Dear Sinann Roots Chat

Very helpful analysis for which I sincerely thank you.

I have been researching for sixty years on and off, usually when I get a small lead which usually bottoms out.

I cannot seem to get by my Grandfathers location at the time he married Catherine Fitzgerald in Tipperary Town. The marriage certificate records John Sampson as deceased NB hand written above his name, yet he was recorded as being alive when he married Margaret Baker (my Grandmother) I only found her grave two years ago in Rathass Tralee but she died in Listowel. Her Mother Margaret Baker "disappeared" before or after her death. Her Father James Baker retired from the British Army lived in Kanturk County Cork but was deceased at the time of his daughter's marriage. The Baker family "dissapeared" I cannot find his burial place. Her Mother is recorded in the Census as born in Tipperary.

The problem is that there were no birth certificate prior to 1864 and. Have no clue as to were any of my family roots were born with the exception of my Grandfathers children.

I know there is some small clue out there someplace that might unlock all these family details.

I want to thank you for your input which is very much appreciated.

Thomas Sampson Grandson

His first wife Catherine (Kate) Fitzgerald died in the North Kerry Railway house, her father Martin Fitzgerald was present at her death. I cannot locate her grave indeed her entire Fitzgerald family "disappeared" after her death.
