Where is "Strand" Dingle area in Kerry, Ireland?
« on: Monday 19 September 16 14:21 BST (UK) »
The NLI marriage records state that my Maurice Donohue was married to Ellen Walsh in 1836 in  Dingle.  The residence of Maurice, ( I suppose, rather than Ellen) is listed as Strand.  Does this refer to the beach area or to the Strand Street in Dingle town?  I'm going to Kerry next month and I want to go to the correct area.

Thanks for any help!

Left hand page
http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634283#page/87/mode/1up

Looking at how the other place names on the page are written, it looks like a street or area in the town of Dingle.

On the OSI Mapviewer, present day Strand Street is showing as Quay St. on the old maps, so it may have been a local name http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/

Thank you for replying.  On the actual Parish register I also see Aghada, Lispole, Ballynaboula and I believe they are townlands.  Couldn't that mean that Strand is also a townland?

It's got Dingle written over it, while the townlands don't have anything else over them and I don't see a townland called Strand.

There is a townland called Strandsend near Chahersiveen.

Looking at the page again I'd like to figure out the one at the top of the left hand page. It's written the same way.
I'll have a look at that later.

:D, it says September.

Dingle is a town as you know, but there is also a townland called Dingle, which most but not all of the town is in.
Sometimes the priest just writes Dingle sometimes Dingle Strand. Why would he distinguish between the two?
It could be one of the 'lost' townlands, but I'd say it was the area of Dingle next to the sea.

The search continues.

If you have a look at the askaboutireland website you'll see that Griffiths Valuation, with a print year of 1852 for the local area, has quite a few people living in what is referenced as:

'STRAND ROAD OR QUAY LANE (OFF GREEN LANE)'

... which according to the maps is in the immediate vicinity of Strand Street today.

Edited to add: an 1864 newspaper carried a death notice for 'Ellen, the beloved wife of Mr Eugene Moriarty', the death was 'at her residence, the Strand, Dingle'. Griffiths Valuation has only two entries in Dingle for Eugene Moriarty, both are in 'STRAND ROAD OR QUAY LANE (OFF GREEN LANE)'.

I'm just looking at Griffiths Valuation now, (no joy with the Applotment books) and there is also Strand Road on it's own.
