Henry William Giles birth
« on: Monday 19 September 16 18:05 BST (UK) »
Please can anyone help me I have been trying to find a birth or baptism for Henry William Giles for a long time, I went to the  Record Office in Bath but only had one day and have tried a lot of online resources.
The census all have his birth as Bath Somerset his age varies.
I wonder it could be this child
1861 Bath Union Workhouse "Boys Attending School in the Workhouse" on the 1861 census.
Hy Giles, pauper, aged 9, born Bath, Somerset.

Register of Young Persons Hired Out (Bath Record Office)
GILES HENRY, age 13, Aug 6/64, Mr Jno PORTER, Shoemaker, Whitley near Melksham, Signature of Presiding Chairman JWB, Known to Mr Wyatt, Master Shoemaker at Workhouse.

1871 census: RG10/1916, folio18, page 7, ED 2, Sch. 40
Whitley Road, Whitley, Melksham, Wiltshire
John Porter, head, mar, aged 70, Boot & Shoemaker, born Somerset Overstowey
Eliza Porter, wife, mar, 56, born Somerset Bathwich
Henry Giles, man, unm, 19, Boot & Shoemaker, born Somerset Widcombe.

This puts Henry near to Hilperton Marsh where Leah Carter his wife to be lived.
On his marriage certificate his father was James Giles a Licensed Victualler. Henry & Leah celebrated their golden anniversary 19 February 1926, a Newspaper report said he would be 70 next week.
Henry William Giles lived in Wiltshire until 1891 but by 1901 he was in Somerset and lived there until he died January 9th 1927 Elmgrove Terrace, Twerton. He was said to be 70 when he died.
If this is correct he cannot be the boy in the workhouse school but I wonder if he knew when he was born?

1881 entry he is 28 (1853)
1891 = 36 (1855)
1901 = 48 (1853)
1911 = 55 (1856)

Variations in birthyears is not uncommon so it is likely you have the correct 1861 entry.  I can't see another census entry for a Henry Giles b Bath around 1852-1856
