Help required in finding an army number
« on: Saturday 24 September 16 20:06 BST (UK) »
Could anyone help me please?
I need to find the army number for:-
Herbert William Clare.
He was born in 1908.
Died 1968.
Married Ivy Honey in 1937.
Lived in Devon.
I have a lot of information on him but cannot access any army records without his service number.
I do not know his regiment.
Any help would be much appreciated.

The original record of the Herbert that Gortonboy found shows a dob of 24 December 1907, born in Norwich and his occupation was shoe hand.

The information is very sparse.  No next of kin mentioned at all and as he wasn't married at the time no info on spouse.

This could be Herbert's birth record.

Did you look for him in the probate records?  I see that he and his wife Ivy died in the same month and year.  Ivy died on the 2nd January and Herbert on the 31st January.

You don't need a service number to purchase service records after 1920 and WW11 but you do need a death certificate and 30 pounds.
