Newton Abbot was just the Registration District - possibly not where he was living when he died.

You have not included any details of his birthyear or actual birthplace - how old was he when he died in 1857?

The 1851 has 2 entries for a John Emmett - both with a wife called Mary.  One born 1786 Abbots Kerswell and living there. The other born 1802 Dean Prior and living there

Both Abbots Kerswell and Dean Prior are in the Newton Abbot RD so can you tell us which 1851 entry is the right one

Nothing on FS for Abbotskerswell.   2 baptisms in 1786 - one in Staverton and the other Woodbury

1851 census has John Emmett, wife Mary , married daughter Mary Gifford, son in law Daniel Gifford & Granddaughter Mary Elizabeth Emmett Gifford

next door is Edward Garrett 61 Mason b Abbots kerwell with wife Elizabeth -a servant & a visitor

could Edward be brother to Mary Emmett (wife of John)?

I got the name Mary (Garrett) from the source A****y but no other data that could be confirmed.  I think he is the correct John. 

I forgot the 1851 census gave him age 50.  I feel sure Abbottskerswell is birth place but not certain.  1786 is deduced but does fit with age of Elias who is far from the eldest child.  Poor Mary.

Assuming this is the correct John I am goiing to find it difficult to establish his parents details I think.
