Apologies - Russell's Garage in Tynemouth was NOT in Violet Street (that was a juxtaposition of advertisements which I read incorrectly). Searching for more information on this one.....

Here's a 1949 photo of the one in Chatham. That could be a newish building, perhaps replacing what was there in the 1930's. http://www.kenthistoryforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=9413.msg64206#msg64206

The Tynemouth one was at 1 Tynemouth Road.

Checked one of my Kelly's directories (1934) and Wm RUSSELL was listed at Tynemouth Place Tynemouth (but doesn't match the area).

Having looked again there appears to ne a smaller "s" after RUSSELL making the garage RUSSELL'S GARAGE

I am now wondering IF it could be BRISTOL

I think Tynemouth Place may have been where Wiliam Russell lived. If you take ShaunJ's 1 Tynemouth Road,(just beyond a current Kwik Fit garage at nos. 5-7) the properties look Georgian to me  e.g. Tynemouth Terrrace, which might vaguely fit a viewpoint.Worth a quick second look at least.

I think the bottom left of the sign says "..day and night service.."

Regards
Roger

Not sure there were any railings on Dove Lane, Bristol?

1900's street map doesn't show anything commercial.
1946 aerial shots are blurred ::)
1949 shows a paper company on both sides of the lane - but Bristol was extensively bombed in WW2.

Thanks for your suggestion. The Directory I used was a commercial (Trade) version so it would list the business and not a private residence! I looked around the area inc. KwikFit and I don't think the style of buildings matched.
The buildings (on the left) in the Russell's Garage card are very similar to those of Bristol.

I've now had the location confirmed as 20 Dove Lane BRISTOL. One Irwin RUSSELL.
