Irish ancestors
« on: Thursday 29 September 16 20:35 BST (UK) »
Hi, am trying to trace relatives who were born in Ireland.  Unfortunately, we do not know what county they were born in.  If anyone has any ideas on how we might be able to trace them, we would be grateful.  We know that they moved to Liverpool but don't know when. Thanks

Hello,

Would your ancestors be in English censuses 1841-1911?
If so, you could begin there - you should be able to get an approximate time for immigration.
Were any children born in Ireland?
There are some good, available records online now.
It is difficult when you have no placename to research but the times they lived, religion etc may be of help.

Regards
Heywood

Hello Susie,
you have a lot of Rootschatters who will try to help but unless you give them some names, dates and places to work with this post will be bypassed.
All the best with your journey it is great fun.

cheers Jack Gee

Hi Jack, the people I'm looking for are Bernard Bowman b 1816 and Elizabeth Mcvicar b 1806 both Ireland.  I have been re-reading my file and established they had a child, Mary Ann who was born about 1838 in Ireland.  Their other children were born in Liverpool.  Have tried the 1841 census for Ireland and tried births and marriages to but to no avail.  I know a lot of records for Ireland were lost but don't know much else about the Irish records.

Beyond some snippets, the 1841 Irish Census and all those up to 1891 have not survived, with the 1901 and 1911 the only ones that are in full.

Did you notice in the 1851 Liverpool census that Elizabeth's sister, Matty McVicker is living with the family, altho' she is 25 years younger than Elizabeth.  Have you been able to find a marriage record for her which may name her father?

1881 English Census gives Dublin as Bernard's birthplace.

Hi Eileen, many thanks for the info.  I hadn't noticed about Elizabeths sister so I will see what I can find out about her.  I have been passed on the details of Bernard and Elizabeth and have done a bit of looking. Had forgotten about that bit about Bernard being born in Dublin when I was writing post. Will let you know how I get on. Thanks

Hope your search goes better than my similar one did. Spent years hunting for mine,  who popped up at a similar time to yours, in Liverpool and then proceeded to keep their Irish roots as obscure as possible (actually 3 different lots!!Could you believe that?) throughout all the censuses in England. One nearly let slip "Dublin", and another let "Tipperary" out one time, and "Wexford" in another, and a third line admitted to Galway - but they've kept their secrets brilliantly. Good luck! Happy hunting.
Threlfall (Southport), Isherwood (lancs & Canada), Newbould + Topliss(Derby), Keating & Cummins (Ireland + lancs), Fisher, Strong& Casson (all Cumberland) & Downie & Bowie, Linlithgow area Scotland . Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)

Thank you.  I have a few that are very elusive too although not from Ireland. Keep getting snippets but not enough to solve the puzzles.
