Love/Hart/McKay , descendants in Scotland/New Zealand and elsewhere.
« on: Friday 30 September 16 01:21 BST (UK) »
While looking for a Scots ancestors the only hits I had on a marriage was in N Z 1876

Can't find her daughters birth in Scotland but the name comes up in births in Nz 1878

Was it likely that 2 families from a coal mining/+ knitting community would emigrated to NZ and  the young people get married there

If it is the right couple
their daughter at least returned to Scotland to get married  and have children including my grandmother in the early 1900's ??

I would have thought it was an expensive journey

I had mining ancestors come to NZ in 1867. There were many Assisted Immigrants to NZ and you can read about how to access the information at https://familysearch.org/wiki/en/New_Zealand,_Immigration_Passenger_Lists_(FamilySearch_Historical_Records

Thanks Abby.ll look at that site tomorrow

I wasn't surprised that they emigrated it was the fact that

Mary Hart McKay b1878 came back as a young woman

Her mother was Mary Love born 1850 in Scotland

The NZ marriage that fits names and dates is Mary Love and John McKay 1876 but I can't access transcripts

Probably just a coincidence .
There is a record of a Mary and William and Mckay leaving GB in 1909 destination not given

No transcription of the actual record, you have to purchase a 'printout' to see the actual register entry for the marriage.

Hi ... can you tell us where you found the above marriage record, please ?
[Have just looked at two different resources and can find it in that year (or another) under the surnames of McKAY / MACKAY or LOVE ]  ???

It was on a FindMyPast search

I've now found a few potential census in Lanarkshire Scotland where the parents had other children first so marriage would have been earlier

Grandma.s sisters had middle names of  love and mckay  ( grandma had Blane after paternal grandmother)

This tradition of taking GMA's surnames was strictly adhered to in my family and I.m lucky that they often used surnames rather than first names .

But I don't know what their grandfather Mckay.s first name was.   (MODIFY It was DUNCAN MCKAY )

It's earlier hours here  will have to check all my records so far .

There were a lot of McKay's in NZ don't know if related .a lot seem to have become sheep farmers !

Haven't looked into the Love family yet .

Hi

Yes ... loads of McKAYs  / MacKAYS / came to New Zealand ... that's why we need some more precise names and dates.   ;)
I've helped with many a search of this surname (in NZ) ... and believe me, it can be mightily confusing in that so many families of the surname, also had the same christian names !!  ;D

Perhaps if you can tell us what you already know about your family before they came to New Zealand, then we can certainly try to find further information for them.

Have just checked FindMyPast ... unfortunately with the same result.  (Marriage not appearing on 3 different resources, which have now been checked.)

Sorry, I can't find the marriage you mention - either here in New Zealand or in Australia.

Hi ... On another earlier thread, you have said ..."but yet her mother was named Mary Hart McKAY around 1884"  ???
