I'd be interested to know how you catalogue and store your collection, 001uk, as it must be huge.  I am hopeless at keeping track of things like that.  Do you identify the places and then put them in an album geographically?  Or keep them in the original collections?  I have a few photos which I've picked up over the years but they are unsorted in boxes, which is not an ideal situation.

I collect some postcards too, but only from one part of London, so they're easy to categorise.  ;D Mine are in piles too - roughly sorted into "one end of the High Street", "the other end of the High Street", "the shops" .... etc.  ;D

I recall reading about a fire in Newcastle-upon-Tyne around 1920's while doing research a while ago.

Could it be Newcastle?

Could the name be "Mikado"?  There was a fire in Hunstanton in August 1922 which destroyed the Mikado Stores in Beach Terrace Road, which backed onto the seafront. The tea rooms could accommodate up to 300 people. (Leeds Mercury 19 August 1922, page 7)

Did you notice the boy scout in the crowd of onlookers?

There were scouts from Shefford in the Hunstanton area shortly after the Mikado fire and the Biggleswade Chronicle (25 August 1922) records that they saw the smouldering remains of the Mikado Theatre (it was a complex of tea rooms, stores,  and a picture house).

The stone does not look the same in the OP's photo as the materials in the building in Carol's link .... however, now that it has been suggested I believe I can see the word MIKADO on that sign.  ;D

I agree Ruskie...and I think the 2 higher windows with banner board under a lower one near to the photographer's position in OP's picture can be seen in the rearmost building in Carol's link.
