Please help locate an address
« on: Saturday 01 October 16 04:11 BST (UK) »
I’m hoping someone can help me determine this location.... Gloucester Court, Ridrofs/Ridross/Redrofs Street, Bristol where they listed their residence in 1844.
I have purchased 2 marriage certs and although I think the last one is correct, I need the location to be close so that I know I’m on the right track.  The wording on the cert isn’t particularly clear, but the marriage was solemnized at the Register Office in the District of Bristol in the ???? County of Bristol.
I have some fairly detailed old maps, but can’t locate this address at all.  I need it to be in the vicinity of Upper Easton.  The census records from 1841-71 have them in Upper Easton / St Phillips & Jacob.  Your help/suggestions would be terrific please.
Cheers, PippaR

Redcross Street isn't too hard to find on a modern map

An old map might show you what sort of area it was at the time in question.
Rutter, Sampson, Swinerd, Head, Redman in Kent.  Others in Cheshire, Manchester, Glos/War/Worcs.

Found it! I think it was also known as Gloucester Place?

Using Bristol City Council's website Know Your Place:
http://maps.bristol.gov.uk/knowyourplace/?maptype=js

Select "Address" (top left) and enter Redcross Street.
Then select the 1855 map (on the right-hand side).
You'll need to zoom in, but Gloucester Place runs north off of Redcross Street

Being an ex-Bristolian helps!
Also, I have used the "Know Your Place" website before - it's very useful ;D
