When are Bristol records going to be online?
« on: Thursday 06 October 16 19:47 BST (UK) »
Hey all, I am really curious if anyone is aware of any schedule of Bristol parish records being online by ether ancestry or findmypast.
I'm aware a lot of transcripts are on family search but only church and date details given, there seems to be hardly anything on freereg too for Bristol.
I would be really interested if anyone knows any sort of time scale this may be until it happens,
kind regards

That's because they are deposited in a different Records Office!

Those PR's currently available come from Gloucestershire Archives.
The Bristol PR's remain with Bristol Record Office.

Presumably Brightsolid (owners of FindMyPast) and Ancestry will have to come to separate agreement with Bristol RO.

I was at Bristol last week and made enquiries about this. It seems the digitalisation has taken place in conjunction with Family Search but problems have arisen over indexing - at the moment nothing appears to be happening. Here's hoping Ancestry or FindMyPast step in and hurry things along,

I believe the registers (at least some anyway) can be browsed on the FS website through the catalogue, but, unless you are a member of the LDS church, you have to go to one of their Family History Centres to do this, unlike some other counties who have allowed access via the FS website for everyone. :-\  I suspect even if they are indexed, this restriction will remain which reduces the accessibility unfortunately.  In many ways it would be far better for researchers if one of the commercial companies took up the cause as this would make them more accessible for anyone with a subscription to the site.
