I think I found her on the National School Register for Aycliffe National School with the following details:


Isabella Chapman born 19 Jan 1895 father Edward Chapman Thompson St – 29 May 1901 removed from school

On the same page there was also:

Frederick Walton (not Chapman!) born 13 Feb 1895 father Edward Chapman 23 Thompson St – 29 May 1901 removed from the school.

An update on this. I decided to go the DNA route and luckily one of Isabella Chapman's other granddaughters decided to do it too. It turned out that my grandmother's niece used to catch the bus from the bottom of my grandmother's road every day for years! Isabella had other children that she had kept. Her children knew about my grandmother but nothing more than her first name so had no way of finding her.
It is a small world.
