The Hampstead birth in 1936 clearly shows they were unmarried at that time - and it looks very unlikely that there was actually a marriage, no matter what they claimed in 1939.

I would wonder whether here was a reason for that - was he already married to someone else ?

The 1943 marriage certificate is the way to go.

Are you saying on Frederick's birth his surname is Stone & his mother's maiden name is Loveless but no father's name is listed?

This is the question you answered yes? I thought  :)

I wonder if there would have been an inquest after Frederick's death?  Perhaps have a chat with someone at Lambeth Archives and see if they can help? https://www.lambeth.gov.uk/places/lambeth-archives

You might also be able to trace them backwards on electoral rolls to see if that gives any indication of how long they had been together etc.

Not that this progresses things, but to rule something out - on the 1938 electoral roll for 152 Stockwell Park Road, it is the Owen family living there.  The Stoneman family are one side, and the Maillot family are the other side as per 1939 but Frederick and Hilda aren't there.

Might have Frederick and Hilda on a 1939 electoral roll at 67 Richborne Terrace, Kennington.  At same address in 1938.

Amazing! I'm round my grandparents now and we are going to take a trip to lambeth next week thank you very much - I printed off the 1939 and noticed her name changed from stone to loveless on 8/7/1941 so one could assume Frederick committed suicide between those two dates.
