Looking for my grandmother martha bell's father. Martha's mother, Jane Hoy married WILLIAM Bell in connor, county antrim. I have martha's death certificate which clearly states her parents as JOHN Bell and Jean Hoy. i have searched for john bell and also william john and john william, but can only find william bell as jane hoy's husband. could william and william john be the same person?

You'll need to give us a bit more detail. When and where did Jane Hoy marry William Bell? when and where was Martha Bell born? where have you already searched for uinformation?

Thanks, jaslain, for posting Martha's birth details.

The informant for Martha's death certificate could have been mistaken about her father's first name.

It's likely that son John just thought Martha's father was a John Bell rather than the William Bell on her birth certificate.

Not that confusing really. The details from the death certificate came from Martha's son who may not have known his grandfather personally, may never actually heard his first name and thought his first name was John.
