Flanagan of Waterford
« on: Thursday 13 October 16 22:18 BST (UK) »
Hello
I am interested in the surname Flanagan from Waterford.
In particular Kathleen Flanagan who was registered in Waterford in the June quarter of 1913 according to her marriage in Woolwich in 1936 her father was called William Flanagan and he was described as a retired police constable.  I do not know the name of her Mother but I think her parents were maybe married in the June quarter of 1907, Registration district Waterford.
I do have the registration references but not sure the best way to order certificates from England
Mary

Have you checked the 1911 Irish census for her parents?

There is only one William Flanagan entry in Waterford married to Ellen and given they had a child aged 3 it may be the 1907 marriage you quote.  However - William is a general labourer

Ellen was nee Kavanagh

This is your Kathleen?

FreeBDM   marriage  MarQ 1936   Woolwich 1d / 1400
FLANAGAN Kathleen   m.   FOUHEY John

What church were they married in.....what occupation for bride and groom.........any addresses on the certificate....who are the witnesses....etc

Can you please list all the information on the marriage certificate.

Does the certificate give Kathleen a birthplace......Waterford?...Ireland?

The 1939 register would give you a birth date for Kathleen.

Where Kathleen names her father as William FLANAGAN, retired police constable, Kathleen might not be born to him eg. William FLANAGAN married Kathleen's widowed mother and Kathleen assumed use of FLANAGAN name....

"...according to her marriage in Woolwich in 1936 her father was called William Flanagan and he was described as a retired police constable."

I am confused. I read that to mean that information about father William is from the marriage certificate.  What is the source of the information about Kathleen's father?.

Additional to the marriage certificate, the birthdate from the 1939 register would be useful....assuming the FOUHEY marriage is correct.

I am blown over with all this help, thank-you so very much. I am a researcher attached to a Family History Society, I often get asked to help my friends with their research when they get stuck. I started helping this chap at the beginning of the week so it is all very new to me.
He has sent me a copy of his parents marriage certificate, he knows all about his father's family but hardly anything about his mothers Flanagan branch. He tells me he thinks!!! she was born in Waterford on the 29th June 1913, hence my reason for contacting this forum

I have found a lot of conflicting information, at first I thought I had found her birth registration in the English BMD's, I followed this all the way through and was able to eliminate this Kathleen. I found another possible registration but again this was negative.

I have found the following -
At the time of the 1939 Register Kathleen Fouhey was  living without her husband at 20 Lansdowne Road, Croydon C.B., Surrey
Her date of birth was given as 26th June 1914.Described as married, Occupation was given as Unpaid Domestic Duties
living with her was Maureen Kemp (Brett,Fouhey) date of birth given as 11th Octobr 1936, Under School age

Maureen's birth registration is
Name:Maureen Fouhey
Mother's Maiden Surname:Flanagan
Date of Registration:Oct-Nov-Dec 1936
Registration district:Colchester
Inferred County:Essex
Volume Number:4a
Page Number:1191

Death Registration of John Fouhey
Name:John Fouhey
Birth Date:abt 1910
Date of Registration:Sep 1953
Age at Death:43
Registration district:Croydon
Inferred County:Surrey
Volume:5g
Page:98

In the 1963 electoral register living at 6 Benson Road, Croydon Kathleen Fouhey [J]
Also living there were
Patrick Burke [J]
John Hargreaves
Kathleen was living in the same place in 1965 but also living there was a Stanley Bevan

Kathleen death registration was
Name:Kathleen Fouhey
Birth Date:29 Jun 1913
Date of Registration:Sep 1971
Age at Death:58
Registration district:Croydon
Inferred County:Surrey
Volume:5a
Page:1628

The information on the marriage certificate is as following -
Married at St Peters R.C. Church, New Road, Woolwich on the 2nd March 1936   - Groom - John Fouhey, aged 25, Bachelor, Profession 822986 Driver R.A., Residence at time of marriage, Grand Depot Barracks, Woolwich, Fathers name Martin Fouhey, Rank or Profession, Dispatch Clerk

Thank-you again for your interest and help
