Foster mother
« on: Friday 14 October 16 18:59 BST (UK) »
My Father died in 1977 And i am trying to find out who was he's Foster Mother.
He never said much about it only his Mother died in Childbirth and his Father was working around in other areas so he was not able to take care of my Dad. In a newspaper item they were called Guardian, I dont think it was Family because he used to say"my Foster Mum".
This was about 1915-1930.
John.
PS is there a site/organisation that has info

Very unlikely.
What's the newspaper article that you refer to? It may help us if we know which town/ county / country you refer to.

What was grandfather's name, when and where was he born?

Well it's a bit personal, But It was the Derby Telegraph 1930 my dad was born in Derby in 1915.
The article said" He's Father and He's Guardian". but he never said Guardian but did say "My Foster Mother when talking about her ( Rarely) in later life.
As you can find most things on line BMD . Schools. Army. Trades. But nothing about Fostering!!

Hi, do not be to tied up in this story. My cousin's father said he was a foundling and bought up by a family in London.
I traced him through his marriage certificate to his foster family.  I found him on the 1911 census relation to head of the household 'nephew'. He was illigitamate born in Norfolk, but bought up by extended family. We will never know if he ever met his mother without him ever knowing, possibly as an auntie or friend of the family?

Your fathers birth certificate should give both his parents names, you could prove the marriage and death of his mother. Who does he live with on the 1939 index?

Hi John

I am a Foster Carer and things are much more formal these days!

A Child's Casebook could include reports from Social Workers, Medical professionals, Foster Carers, Parents, School and police if relevant.

I would be surprised if any files still exist for the years you are interested in, and they would be nowhere near as comprehensive as today's. I believe the 100 year Privacy Law comes into play. Plus only the child would be able to apply to see any records, which obviously  is not possible in your case.

Sorry to not be of more help.

Regards
Giggsy

There was no formal adoption before the act of 1926, so there is unlikely to be any official records of fostering, unless guardianship was arranged through a solicitor, again unlikely as his father was alive.

If you can find any then I'd suspect schools admissions will give a home address and parent/ guardian information.
Did you find anything in that? Don't expect it to be online.
Or are there vaccination records with similar info?
