John Adams ELLEY
« on: Friday 14 October 16 23:21 BST (UK) »
I am researching my Elley family history which is mainly linked to Tasmania.  I have traced back to my Gt-Gt-Gt Grandfather John Adams Elley and his wife Sarah King Macphail.  I have just found this site and a number of comments about John and Sarah which were posted in 2011.  Most of the information I have is identical to that posted on roots.com.  I am hoping someone in the UK can shed some light though.  John and Sarah had a son, also called John who was born in 1820.  He is my Gt-Gt-Grandfather and he travelled to Tasmania some time between 1820 and 1846 when he married a Louisa Wells in Tasmania.  I would like to find out when he left England.  I can find nothing on any site I have researched, including immigrants listings into Tasmania.  Can anyone point me in the right direction. Grateful thanks.

He is not with his family on the 1841 census.

Might be him at 15 Woods Buildings Lambeth aged 20 a Sailor in 1841 census?

A mention of a John Elley in TAS in '43, third last column: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article2952578

It would appear that there is more than one John Elley in TAS around that time.

Marraige of their son William George, first column: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article12727242

Hi do you know where in UK the family originated?  I guess you may have the following record of a John Elley Departing on 14/4/1852 from Hobart to Melbourne ship Harriet Nathan, Occ Gold Digger age 35 which would make his birth date circa 1817
There is a Baptism for a William MacPhail Elley 10th July 1831 Birth 12th June 1831 Saint Leonards Shoreditch London. Parents John Adams Elley Mother Sarah King. This may help to narrow down place of origin for family as it seems to be the parents you mention.

Thank you all so much for replying - there are so many Elleys and so many Johns!!!  John Adams Elley's son also called John would, I think, have left the UK prior to the 1841 Census because he's not listed with his other brothers, sisters and parents.  In Tasmania, John and his wife Louisa had a son called William George.  I have seen the listing of a John Elley departing from Hobart to Melbourne but I am sure he's not mine.  I would ideally like to find out when John left the UK and arrived in Hobart but as mentioned, the immigrant lists I have searched do not mention him.  I have all relevant information from his marriage to Louisa in Tasmania onwards - it's just the departure from UK that I'm stuck on.
Rgds - Lyn.

Only some immigration records survive for the port of Hobart and very few for other ports in Tasmania and if he paid his own way he may not be recorded by name.  There are no UK departure records for that time period.  The name could easily be recorded as ELLIS or something similar.  There was a John HEALEY who arrived from Port Philip in 1842.

John was a Gentleman/District Constable/Chief Constable/Poundkeeper/Inspector of Stock etc. and Licenced Victualler.

Apparently the two youngest children were not his.  He deserted Louisa and left the colony  in the early/mid 1850s.  Unfortunately when Louisa applied to have two children admitted to the Orphan School in 1862 they recorded that the father was native born instead of naming his ship of arrival.  He was again recorded as native born when the other children were admitted in 1863 after Louisa died.

I guess you may have the following record of a John Elley Departing on 14/4/1852 from Hobart to Melbourne ship Harriet Nathan, Occ Gold Digger age 35 which would make his birth date circa 1817

This may well be him as it was not long after his second bankruptcy and the ensuing hoo ha.  He would have had to return though if he was the father of William born c1856.

You need to contact Tas Archives to see if they can check the gaol admission records for 1851.  They should name John's ship of arrival.
